You can actually shift up and down without using the clutch. Is it good for the transmission? I have no idea but if properly done, I would assume it is fine. When I used to drive Sterlings, Volvos and Mack trucks, I would only use the clutch to stop and go. From gears L-10 (Or whatever the gear was per truck), I would just rev match so it became second nature. The trucks had 200,000 plus miles on them and ran like champs. My G has just shy of 80,000 miles and still is smooth. Just for what it's worth.

I don't see the point of doing this...save your clutch but risk damaging a much more expensive tranny?

I don't think it will trash a transmission unless you are just learning and you miss 80% of the time. But if you know how, do it as you please. If not, use the clutch. He was just asking if it could save your clutch and theoretically, it can. However, is it worth it? Not in my opinion. It just happens that I do it by second nature sometimes.

The synchros are not made for that type of load and unless you get the RPM exactly right they will wear very quickly. Then it will grind even with the clutch.

Pulling it out of gear w/o the clutch is fine when it is unloaded, putting it back in is totally different -the synchros will try to force the engine to match the tranny speed - lots of load
