VDC On or Off??
Re: VDC On or Off??
I read that you can do a donut with the VDC off...and I believe its a little faster on take off if u leave it off...
I'm not sure if u can burn out with it off...haven't tried yet..

I'm still not sure what the VDC off switch turns off - I think it turns off both VDC and tract. cont. allowing wheel slippage on takeoff which would then allow faster 0-60 times (provided you're careful not to go up in total smoke). Remember though if you turn off VDC that the computer's not going to do anything to help if you do something foolish. I'm still breaking in yet but maybe someone else has experimented? Turning the VDC off doesn't acutally "turn it off" it just lowers the sensitivity so that traction control kicks in only life-or-death circumstances. I think is this true of every street-legal production vehicle. Even sport mode on an M3

Re: VDC On or Off??
well for what it's worth...(I have the coupe on pre-order) and went for a spin in the Sedan with my dealer the other day....we headed to their storage warehouse parking lot.....turned off the VDC and did about 2-3 FULL donuts... tires screaming (& melting), smoke everywhere....it was pretty impressive for the base model.....so yes, I do believe that when you turn the VDC OFF..you can do just about anything in this car! ....LOTS of torque to boot!

Turning it off will also allow you to swing your back end at the track as rear wheel cars do. However, if you oversteer or understeer than that's your problem =)

Natev - that wouldn't happen to be a dealer in Boston would it? =) if so, I had the same experience there on a test drive, they really encouraged you to test the limits on the G35.

I didn't buy the one I drove on my demo. In fact after my test drive I would suggest everyone buy one with as little miles as possible. Mine had 12 when I drove it home and I put six on it during a test drive.

Re: VDC On or Off??
I posted this on the freshalloy forum but maybe I can get a more direct answer here.
When I test drove a G last month, I turned off the VDC and floored it from a dead stop and did not break the tires loose. Has anyone else experience this? It seems that when you mash the gas, there is no power for a while and then the engine hits 3000 or 4000 RPMs and it takes off.

Not true, of the '02 M3 anyway. My brother has one, and took delivery of it at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, SC. As such, he got to participate in a 1-day driving school on their test course. In one of the exercises, they did a manuever on a wet course, and with the ASC (Active Stability Control) on the car remains absolutely solid and on track right through the manuever, but in the next pass at the same speed, but with ASC off, the car totally spun out.
However, he has the SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox, basically F1-style shifter like in the Ferraris) and even on the sportiest shift setting and with ASC off, he can only get a limited wheel-spin before the computer takes over and slips the clutch a little to let the tires gain traction. But it was still enough to make some smoke and let the rear end fishtail.

Coming up: '03 Infiniti G35 Coupe 6-speed

Re: VDC On or Off??
Ya need to be careful wit dat VDC button. Trust me it aint to be fu*ked wit. Leave it on until you know the car very well or take it off in an open area. Experiment with it at your own risk...

Re: VDC On or Off??
I am a little bit confused.
i read comments about "like the rear wheel cars do" and spinning the tires...
Have the G35's changed at all from then til now? My 2004 IS a real wheel drive car. And with the VDC off, I can fish tail the back end in 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd gear. I just looked through the circuitry in the service manual... I think when the button is pressed and the vdc is off, it is completely off, no traction support (from the VDC, electrically, which uses the brakes) The car also has a limited slip differential that is mechanical and can not be turned off.
Am I wrong on any of this?
