6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

So I have my car in for service because its griding hard from 4th to 6th and sometimes from 5th to 6th. Dealer calls and says Inf tech in California told him the car isn't designed to skip gears and this griding can be expected if done so. What kind of BS is that? I have had 4 stick cars in my life (all MSRP under $20K) that NEVER had this problem. Plus, the dealer says they cant get it to grind from 5th to 6th, how convienent. So now I have a case file going with consumer affairs on this ****. Have any of your heard of this excuse before? Now I'm just supposed to live with the fact its been grinding for 3 months and forget about it? This might be my first and last Inf purchase!

complete BS. One of the definitions of a true MT is the ability to choose any gear at any time (you don't want to do this if it would put you into the redline though.)

BTW, can you tell us how many miles you have on the car? I am suspecting that I'll develop the same type of trouble with my MT.

20K commuter miles. I drive 70 miles round trip on the toll roads. Dont take the car to redline, simple regular shifting. Hell, I have 9 differ threads containing many many people with the same problem as myself and they have gotten serviced. Whats the deal?

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

They should def take care of you...Just keep raisin hell and you should be fine...But out of curiosity why do people shift from 4th -6th and skip 5th...Is there a special reason for it, or just laziness...I've personally never done it, even if I'm only going to be in 5th for 2 seconds I get in and get out and off to 6th...Don't take the laziness comment personally, I'm just stating an extreme...

I do it when I accelerate onto the highway faster than I should. If I'm in 3rd and at 70 MPH and don't want to accelerate any further, I'll go from 3rd directly to 6th. There is no real reason to go into 4th or 5th in that situation since there will be no further acceleration.

Read you manual. If there is no language backing up what they told you (likely), they will have to service you.

Moderators, why can't I edit my posts? After I edit one, it just sends me to a screen that says something like "Darn PlatG :User"

I meant to say,

Read youR manual. If there is no language backing up what they told you (unlikely), they will have to service you.

Nothing in manual that says not to skip gears

Uuuhhh, I think he means service your car.

On a more serious note, when you're shifting are you waiting for the revs to fall within 2500-3000 rpm's or are you in 3rd gear around 75 or 80 mph (reads near redline) and then immediately shifting into 6th gear?

I've learned that my car will not go into 6th (from 3rd or 4th) without grinding the gears unless I'm at the right rpm range (2500-3000). This is a bit of a PITA, but as of now (~7300 miles) this technique seems to be working. As stated above, the only time this happens is when I'm getting onto the Interstate... merge my a$$, just floor it and find the hole!

The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

"merge my a$$, just floor it and find the hole!"

Hmmm, I think he means merge his car and finding a hole in the traffic.

xcelr8,

Just and idea that is a little on the extreme side. If they won't fix it because they say it is not required, then why don't you rag the s__t out of your trany? Grind the gears on purpose until the thing is totally f----d up. Then they will have no choice but fix it. And then you can give them the old "I told you so!!!" Just an idea.

Looks like XCELR8 has two different threads running on this topic - I just posted my $0.02 on the other one.

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

I just had my tranny replaced two weeks ago. They did not ask if I had skipped gears. I did notice that it is more likely to grind if the tranny is warm.

This is what I had to do. I bitched long enough until the service manager went with me on a 20 minute test drive (long enough to warm up the fluid). Then it ground
