clutch pedal click when releasing pedal

i've got my clutch pedal clicking when it's about 3/4 of the way back (letting up). i've looked at the linkage and there's grease on the pins and joints. i don't want to take in to the dealer for warranty work since it's just a noise and more hassle dropping it off in the morning/taking time off work/etc. can anyone help out on what to adjust or look for? on the shaft going through the firewall it has a bevel so i'm hoping the bevel is not getting caught on the lip of the hole.
