so i need to get a new clutch for my 06 coupe and the dealer is telling me that i should also replace the flywheel. all that plus installation will put me back around 2.5k! i suggested that they only resurface the flywheel and the service manager said that they cant.. now is that true because its a dual mass? or are they trying to squeeze every nickle out of me? i plan on not using the dealership to install to save about 700. and i dont really want an oem clutch or an aftermarket flywheel (because of the chatter). has anyone ran an aftermarket clutch with a resurfaced oem flywheel? or am i just retarded? throw your opinions pleeease
Resurfacing a stock dual-mass flywheel is not recommended because it is very difficult to get the friction surface as flat as is needed. The dampening mechanism within the flywheel allows the two halves to move independently which would cause oscillation and thus an inconsistent surface. Lack of flatness would cause issues with seating the new clutch and can cause increased chatter and reduced clutch life. That being said...don't use the original flywheel again! You can certainly buy another stock flywheel and use it with either an OE or aftermarket clutch or you can opt to use an aftermarket steel flywheel. I am personally running a SPEC Stage 2+ clutch kit and SPEC Billet Steel flywheel. This flywheel has similar weight to the stock unit allowing it to provide as much dampening as possible while eliminating the OE dual-mass design. thanks a lot spec... hows the chatter from the steel flywheel? dealer said its baad.. i dont know if i want to put a whole lot of merit in what he says because they are running a business and want to make money.
Having had our steel and aluminum flywheels in my G35 I can say that the steel is much quieter than the aluminum. There isn't that much clatter (gear noise at idle compared to some of the other cars I have had) but there is some resonance at high-load, low RPM with both flywheels but steel is completely livable! I don't think it is bad at all to be honest, but I knew what to expect. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
