6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

Okay, I am pissed off. My tranny for the last 2 weeks has not been wanting to engage 6th gear if I shift above 4000 rpms from 3-4th gears. (Yes skip shifting). Been doing it on all standard cars for 15 years. It has worked fine on this one as well. Anyways, the dealer said they called the tech-line and they said that skipping gears will cause this, and could damage the transmission. I told them that was bs. We had a pretty nasty phone conversation. If it was so bad, how come its not in the owners manual, and how come any other standard can do it except this one now (after 17k of miles all of a sudden?). I also took the car in for the brakes. They did my 15k service, and now my front rotors are vibrating the car. They come back and said they don't feel it, but I feel it when I drive the car. It never use to vibrate my car like this. I told them to check again.

I already called Infiniti consumer affairs and made a case. The lady even said well if it started 2 weeks ago and never did it before, then I see there is a problem. Thank you!

She will be contacting the dealer she said and tech-line. Even the tech that rode with me that supposely was the one doing the work, didn't think my tranny should be locking me out of my gear like that.

So I am lost. I swore even in the owners manual it says you can skip shift for better gas milege?

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

Update. Service Manager asked for me to come by and take her for a test drive. She drove it, couldn't duplicate it, but she wasn't really trying hard. I drove it back (50 miles of test drives so far), and I was able to show her do it several times, and she saw it happen. She said she will now call regional reps to see what she can do and get it either fixed or replaced. She also agrees its not right, and said that the decision is in Infinitis hands now. I will keep everyone posted.

Oh yea, rear rotors warped because they didn't resurface them at 15k. I won't allow them to do 30k this time, waste of money for [censored] they didn't do IMHO.

Welp, overnight the car transmission 6th gear has failed. Any gear going into 6th now grinds ugly. I drove it by the dealer, they verified, and now said we need the car Friday and give you a loaner till we get it fixed. I said thats fine!

Glad to hear that your little nightmare sounds like it's on it's way to an acceptable conclusion. FWIW, I've been trying to decide if Gun was going to get my business or if I'm going to go to Austin. Let us know when everything is finally resolved and your final opinion of the dealership/service center.

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

Carbon copy of what happened to me. Was going from 4th to 6th and the syncros wouldn't line up. Then it started from 5th to 6th. Tech in CA said the car wasn't designed to skip gears (bull-sheeet) and they weren't going to cover it. Long story short.... had to threaten a lawsuit and filed a BBB complaint against them. Turns out, the dealer never took the car for a long enough ride to get the car into 6th gear above 3500 rpms!! Once they re-test drove the car with me there they decided to warranty the trans. It was a 2 week nightmare.

P.S. I got my satisfaction survey from Inf yesterday. Will have fun filling that out!

Just curious what year and month where your cars manufactured in? My manuf. date is April 2003 I want to go FI but little afraid of the trans crapping out on me

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

Mine was made in Feb and sold in late April 2003. From what they told me, tech in CA says they under engineered the trans in 2003 but beefed it up in 2004. So all the 2004 cars and warranted trans for 03 cars are the tougher ones.

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

xcler8, how many miles did you have when the syncros went? Im at 23K I think if I make it to 35K im safe with the trans but I could be wrong on that, in most cases that I've read about with the syncro problem it was usually under 25k miles I wish infiniti would just recall all the earlier manufactured 03's . Another question do you guys shift in to your gears hard?

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

It started to go around 21K miles, and it was so bad around 22K that the floor would vibrate when shifting. That was 4th to 6th, 5th to 6th was just starting to cause problems. But once it went, it went fast. Sometimes when it would engage into 6th under hard acceleration, it would actually pop itself out of gear. Trying to shift it hard above 4K rpms was like trying to get Brittany Spears to admit her chest is fake. Wasnt going to happen.

The new trans is a ton better. Can shift any power range and has a lot tigher pattern. With the old one shifting into 5th would usually require me to push the stick in a hard diagonal toward the upper right side. Now, 4th to 5th are nearly in the same gate. Takes very if no effort to push up into 5th. Same from 5th to 6th. Sort of guides itself

Re: 6MT Problems and Dealer not wanting to fix

Oh yeah.. they even replaced the clutch at the same time under warranty. Dealer said while they were there it wasnt a bad idea. Some have had to pay for a new one when getting a new trans, but they did mine w/out even asking. Prob cause I gave them so much hell.
