That's Amsoil doing its job. Everyone I know who switched got vertually no metal particles on the magnet afterwards.

Re: Rear Differential changed (A MUST DO) READ!

i got 7500 miles and i'm going in for my 2nd service on friday. should i add on a LSD and tranny (6MT) fluid changes while i'm there? i would like to do them myself but which can i do at home without voiding the warranty and is very easy. i haven't done too many regular oil changes, let alone LSD or tranny flushes.

It was about 20 minutes of labor. My mechanic did it for about $22 including tax. Worth it not to have to jack the thing up and get stinky gear lube all over me and the floor.

Are you guys using the Amsoil or just using their OEM fluid for this?

I use this in everything I own with a gearbox. Never had a problem with any of them. Made my BMW K1200 shift smooth as a *** bike. K bikes are known for kinda clunky shifts and the characteristic "K-whine". Not anymore. Good stuff for all gears including LSD.

Pardon me with the newb question but what exactly is the rear deferential fluid? What is its purpose? Is it on every car?

Just wondering. Thanks.

Re: Rear Differential changed (A MUST DO) READ!

A rear differential is the gearcase that transfers power from the transmission and driveline, to the rear wheels. Front wheel drive cars have a transaxle that integrates this into a single unit. It allows power to be applied at different ratios to each wheel due to radius differences in turns. Some are open (1 wheel powered), some are limited slip (alternating power depending on amount of slippage), and locked (both wheels continuously driven/straight line drag applications). If you have a limited slip, a good rule of thumb is to change the fluid once a year, or 15000 miles. A non-limited slip can go 50000 miles or more if synthetic is used.

I did mine on my non LSD 6MT sedan at 30k miles. I put Mobile 1 gear oil in. It is much smoother. Yes there are a lot of shavings in there. Do it now.

So will Infiniti void my warranty if I give them Amsoil to put in my diff? I heard somewhere that Amsoil was accepted but I want to be sure...

What weight gear oil does Infiniti actually call for in the differential?

I think 80w90 if the temp is above 0*F...75w90 is also an option, but they recommend 80w90 for some reason (?)
