Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

Try Amsoil,Redline or Royal Purple. check out their sites.
I prefer Royal Purple, Max 75W-90. I run in both the MT and the LSD. but other synths are very good as well.

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

This is a totally stupid question, but what exactly does the rear differential fluid do? What's the recommended change interval? I know for my Frontier, it's 60k miles.

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

Lubricates the up to $2500 differential gears [VSLD] less without.
The differential is the highest frictional loss unit [except for tires] in the drive train [8% losses at cold low rpms/speed dropping to 2% when warm at cruise rpms].

Owners who have never paid to replace one after warranty are missing out on a learning experience.

Like all lubricants the optimum low friction point is above 150F and below 220F...........good quality pure synthetics can reduce friction up to 1% ........more in cold weather and still run cooler in summer. A Rear HP bargain.

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

Definitely not a stupid question.

The interval for the G is 30k miles, but people that have elected to change it early have been finding significant amounts of metal in the fluid.

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

On the strong recommendation of my friend, I just had the differential oil changed on my 6MT sedan [at only 3800 miles]. It certainly did have a noticeable amount of metal chips in it [to my surprise] from the break in of the car. So I too would recommend others to change their differential oil early.

I used Moble 1 75-90W Synthetic Gear Oil. It took just over 1-1/2 quarts.

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

Mobile one is fine, (much better than OEM).
Amsoil is little better than Mobil1
and RP and Redline are pretty close and the best IMO.

I changed mine very early at 1000 miles and found plenty of metal. I used AMSOIL 75W90 Series 2000 gear oil in the trans and diff.

fyi

I've posted this before in another thread but here's a site with a lot of useful info on oil.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

The forums on there are really helpful. I've heard that Mobil1 isn't full synthetic. Redline, Amsoil, and another - I forget which one are full synthetic.

ZeroGen,

According to the printing on the bottle, Mobile 1 meets the API GL-5 standards for 75W-90 gear lubricant, it also says...

"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant is a race proven FULLY SYNTHETIC product that outperforms conventional extreme pressure type lubricants in both conventional and limited slip applications... "

I'm sure we can agree that there's many good gear lubes out there to chose from. I used Mobil 1 because it's readily available where I live and the others aren't.

Thanks for the info. Don't quote me on the "Mobil1 isn't full synthetic." I may have read or heard that it wasn't but then again, it could have easily been another oil. Also, I do believe that Mobil1 is a good synthetic oil. It's basically personal preference on which to use.

Anyhow, here are a couple more informative links on synthetics:

Re: Diff Oil Recommendations?

I thought I read that it was Castrol that wasn't a true synthetic. Mobil 1 is I believe.
