Help, just had Exedy Stage 1 & JWT flywheel installed…chatter
Hey guys,
Just had my clutch swapped out in my 2003 G35 Coupe…went with an Exedy Stage 1 clutch and JWT Jim Wolf flywheel, unfortunately, first impressions on the clutch haven’t been so great. When getting into first, second, or reverse gears there a lot of chatter. What I mean is there a lot of vibration in the entire car, is that normal? It’s especially bad when you’re in traffic or trying to maneuver in a parking lot, just a ton of vibration with light throttle and the clutch not fully engaged.
I know it’s slightly more aggressive than a stock clutch/flywheel combo and I was prepared for additional noise…but the vibration and shaking is driving me crazy. Any ideas?
Thanks!

its your flywheel. Only option is to swap it out to something heavier (nismo, spec), go back to oem flywheel or live with it. This is a common complaint when people replace the dual mass flywheel with a single mass lighter flywheel.
the JWT flywheel is notorious for that. it is the input shaft rattling. should be mainly at lower RPMs (like 1500-2200). you will also notice more of the vibration from the engine through the shifter and some in the clutch pedal. it is the nature of a lightened flywheel on the VQ motor. best solution is the +Volume button on the radio.
It will become less when clutch breaks in. Clutch is agressive and doesn't like to slip(I have Exedy Racing 1 +ACT Streetlite flwh). You need to adjust your driving style too-must be quite quick, but smooth-do not let it slip.
I still stall ocassionallly... I also notice it is much smoother when car heats up. Reverse is a bitch!
Just do not do any burnouts, high rpm clutch dumps first 500 miles or it will make things worse.
Your flywheel is not causing chatter(it rattles-quite different thing) despite some comments in this thread, but combination with this particular clutch may make drivability suffer more than with heavier flywheel.

I have incredibly bad clutch chatter on my evo. The car vibrates a lot, and usually happens if I give it only a little bit of gas. If I give it more gas, the chatter is decreased a lot and most of the time eliminated. I almost always happens on a hill through. I always thought the chatter is the clutch slipping and causing the catch-release-catch-release vibration and chatter you feel.
Using an ACT 6-Puck w/ lightened flywheel.
You'll get used to it. At first, I was stalling like crazy because the vibration would cause my foot to lift off the clutch (6 puck engagement point is super tiny) and cause a stall. After a while, the vibration seems to die away, but on occasion you will still get the chatter/vibration with harsh clutches.

Besides the clutch and flywheel, the clutch bearing in our cars tends to make some noise too. Not usually the best thing to hear, but it's actually pretty normal for our cars.
Damn…oh well, as long as it holds the power for a year or two I’m happy.
My only complaint is that it won’t let me slip and ease into first or second in traffic/parking lots/speed bumps/etc., you either throw it into gear with plenty of throttle or deal with the aggressive jerking.
Thanks for all the replies everyone!
