Re: Tranny Swap
Kamal
Where are you getting these numbers?
I have done some fairly extensive research. Te swap will be easier on a coupe, as the ecu's are the same as in the MTs (at least similar).
The parts totalled aproximately $3200-$4000. I AM considering doing this in the future some time, in the event that my AT fails. The labor should be about $1500-2500 (2-3 days of work).

Re: Tranny Swap
Depending on the situation with your current automatic, it is most likely cost prohibitive to do a swap. Probably cheaper selling off the automatic and getting a manual. Then you won't have to worry about making sure the job gets done right and cutting up the floor panel for the clutch pedal and converting the center console for the stick and hand ebrake and ecu issues etc. etc.

Yea man ur totally right. Gurgen, I think ur overlooking the labor factor. if you still add up the figures you gave, it still comes out to abou 6500-7000. Either way, Its still reallllly freqan high to get a manual in an auto. I would just suggest getting a fully built race tranny. : /

Re: Tranny Swap
6-spd race tranny in either manual or sequential is going to run you 12-18K. That would not include the parts for the clutch, shifter and the center console conversion.
I too am considering a 6MT swap at some point. Gurgen's numbers seem about on target from what I have been quoted.

Re: Tranny Swap
The labor is not ging to be more than that.
Also, the cost that I quoted includes the rear diff assembly (which I do NOT need as i already have the 6mt VLSD, and it is not a necessary upgrade if you would prefer to have shorter gears for the high hp engine), and the new ECU (which also may be unnecessary)
Our stock MTs can be had for ~1200 BRAND NEW FROM THE DEALER (with a good discount). It is the rest of the stuff that is expensive. Namely, it is unclear how the ECU will react, and whether a full harness swap is ncessary (engine AND main). However, I think that there are ways around this. It is just that it will difficult to do for the first time.

That's very true.....ONLY if oyu car is near stock and you can just drive it down to the dealer's lot. But, for someone who is already heavily invested in the car, and it will take thousands just on labor to remove SC/TT kit nad put it back on, the conversion may be well worth it.
For me for example, who already has the 350z diff (and if I didn't , I would still stick with the AT rear end and add an LSD) an access to an ECU, I would just need approximately $2200 in parts plus labor (which is really not going to be more than ~$1500 if you take it to the right place).

Re: Tranny Swap
gurgen, what I haven't priced is the cost of the interior....center console, shifter kit, ashtray, cup holders, etc... Of course every little part is separate, but just curious if you priced those yet. My guess would be 500-1000.
I wonder who will be the first to get this done...I also wonder if a dealer would be cool enough to do the swap if someone's AT went bad (perhaps with the customer paying for the extras). I know if my AT went bad i'd be asking for a 6MT
...it couldn't hurt.

Josh
I just dn't see how a dealership would agree to do a swap, certainly not under any kind of warranty. I guess they might. If you are serious about this, can recommend a place or two that has actually done this before.
I have not priced the interior trimmings yet, no. I do suppose that it will be on the order of several hundred (but probably under a $1000). Let me know if you do.

Re: Tranny Swap
I did this conversion myself twice, once in a BMW 2002, and once in a 5 series. You may be overlooking certain issues, and required parts. It's not just the trans you'll have to replace. With the 5 series I needed a new driveshaft, instrument cluster, radiator (you can just seal the AT fluid cooler part if you want), clutch hydraulics, master cylinder (with an extra line to supply the clutch hydraulics), pedal box, transmission mounts and trans crossmember, shifter, center console, and the differential, (you could keep the AT rear, but the ratios were different, and then the speedometer would be way off.) The worst surprise is that the steering column went THROUGH a hole in the pedal box, so the entire steering column had to be removed to change the pedal box. I was lucky to have a wrecked 5 speed donor car right next to the transplant patient.
With a couple of friends helping, the 5 series swap took me about 20 hours and a couple of cases of beer.
