Question 5AT 3rd gear question.

I have a 05' 5AT and I drive in the sport manual mode always. I have never had any gear/tranny problems but I find 3rd is a very odd gear it seems there is a small sweet spot between 2900-3050rpm to get a clean shift. unless I shift below 2krpm or above 5krpm.

Other then that 2000-2900rpm & 3050-5000rpm I tend to get a "clunk" as it engages.

My tranny fluid is fresh, what out there is a known cause for this or is it a common sympton?

Noticed that with mine as well. In the mornings after I warm it up for a few min, I like to drive it in manual mode so I don't go over 2K and 1-2 shifts fine but 2-3 isn't as smooth. I'm thinking it's all of our AT's. Also noticed that when in reg mode and driving calm trying to keep it close to 2K 2-3 takes longer to shift into and has that rough shift. Might just be the gear ratio. Don't think you have anything to worry about though!

Sweet, I had a sneaking suspicion that was the case. Iv become good at avoiding it but it was a bit of a hair raiser unroll now.

^Just because it happens to others doesn't stop it from being a hair raiser. Happens to me just as you describe, but it still feels like the transmission fell off the car when it happens. It also tends to turn the passengers' heads...

That don't sound normal. To me if I'm pushing the car its a normal shift. it only happens at low rpms, but its def not slamming or clunking into 3rd. Its just not as smooth as any of the other shifts. Def not something that turns the passengers heads though!

While pushing the car, like high shifts, the clunk is no longer there. its really the low shiftsthat do it. that clunk sounds abnormal at high rpm.

It's normal. You just got to play with it a bit and find a good spot to shift.

I've never noticed this and I MM all the time, low and high RPM. I'll have to look out for it.

Mine does it to I have been to the dealer and they tell me that it's normal so I said ok so when the tranny falls out you have it on record that I have brought it to your attention. It also does it when you go from 2nd to 1st when coming up to a stop

The 5AT is supposed to shift harder as the ECM communicates calculated load to the TCM which in turn increases line pressure. This is to prevent slippage of the clutch packs under high torque conditions. In other words, a rough shift is actually easier on the clutch packs than a slow slip, comfort shift. Harder on the gears perhaps, but those are metal and can take the abuse.
