G35 transmission failure. Long story...

So, my lil brother bought my g35 from me a month ago. He wanted to do an oil change while he has been on leave from the Marines. He asked me to do it sunday and i asked him to be patient and wait till monday. SO, sunday night he cleans the HKS POD FILTER and changes the oil. Except he ended up draining the transmission and and filling up the engine oil with 4.5 quarts.

He drove it to my place which was 10 miles away and asked me to help diagnose the problem. before he got there he stopped at autozone and get the codes from the ecu read.

P0745 - LINE PRESSURE SOLENOID FAULT
P1716 - TURBINE REVOLUTION SENSOR

keep in mind he was 4 quarts short on transmission fluid by the time he arrived to my place. I then hit up the local dealership for MATIC S 4 QUARTS and filled the transmission. It drove fine after that for awhile.

Now it seems like it goes through the gears properly but at somepoint it comes out of drive and goes into a neutral while driving. but if you shut if off and turn it back on it will drive in D(drive) OR R(reverse).

I DRAINED THE FLUID AND FILTERED IT USING A WHITE SHIRT TO LOOK FOR METAL SHAVINGS OR SLUDGE. ALL IT HAD IN THE FLUID WAS A DARK BLACK LOOK AND SMELLED BURNT.

it is a 2003 G35 COUPE automatic transmission.

GENTLEMEN THANK YOU FOR YOU READING THIS POST AND YOU HELP. I NEED TO GET MY LIL MARINE BACK ON THE ROAD ASAP.

that's definitely a damaged transmission...you're looking at rebuild or replacement, i'd try and find a used one...keep in mind you need the 03- early 04 model

That sucks.

I wouldn't know what else to do besides another pan drain.

Maybe add a magnefine filter? Does anyone know of the code from the sensor above was from overheat? Just grasping for things

Damn that sucks. Not very knowledgeable on ECU compatibility but I don't think that one will work. Maybe it can be reprogrammed

Thought we needed matic J in the trans?

Edit: Nevermind- looks like they're the same thing (more or less).

Just to get the story straight- this guy drained the trans and then filled the oil? So there is (or was) an extra 4 quarts of oil in the engine while there were 5 quarts or so short of trans fluid? Not being snarky... just wanting to make sure we've got the jist of what happened.

Also just wondering if he actually DRAINED the trans- that's a lot more than 4 quarts. When I had mine rebuilt it took 11 or 12 if memory serves...

When u drain it u don't get all the fluid out, only about 4-5 quarts..

Resmarted over in my350z has a stock one for sale... Have to check the year... Has upgraded clutch packs (not installed yet) too... Might be worth a look!

As for the fluid quantities... Thanks for clearing that up!

sadly, that '05 transmission won't work in your '03 - i think only '03s and 04s (not the 04.5s) will work for you. good luck with everything OP...our ATs can be a b!tch sometimes.
