Yeah one is thick gear oil and the other is thin hydraulic fluid.
I'll admit though I'm curious to see how long the differential would last on Matic S. I bet you would get a month out of it at highway speeds, it won't take long for hydraulic transmission fluid to overheat and start belching out of the diff vent though.
hmmmm... I got into DIY for my car a few years back. I went to the infiniti dealership, bought a new diff drain plug and 3 qts of Matic S (guy said get 3 just in case). bought a pump and drained out 1.5 qts and put in 1.5 of matic S. Pretty sure this was 2.5 yrs / 24k miles ago. Havent had any problems with the car. I think I must have been naive and just put what the service guy said to put in OR i was dumb and just asked for Matic S ATF fluid and put it in the diff. Anyway... I went and got 2 qts of Mobil 1 75w90 and put it in yesterday. The fluid that drained out was not burnt or black. It looked somewhat clear. I put my finger in it and there was some yellow in it.. Also, the pump that I used originally had some yellow gunk in it from when I originally filled. There were no metal shavings on the drain plug. Drove the car this morning and dont feel much of a difference.
I was looking at drain and fill for my transmission yesterday. That is what sparked me to remember this/ look into this.
Attached pics.. Sorry they are so large. is this new mobil 1 fluid ok?
So you ran transmission fluid in your diff for 2 years and 24k miles with no issues? If I read that right then you're a lucky man. But for the diff oil any quality 75-90 will work fine. I used Amsoil but the M1 will work as well.
If you have a manual trans, you will need a GL4 fluid: Nissan MTF or Redline MT85. Will take 3.5 qts, so buy 4 and have some left over.
Mobile1 is a GL5 fluid.
If you have an Auto trans, then you'll use the Matic S or J or whatever it calls for.
Auto trans fluid is red and fairly thin, same stuff as power steering fluid. It doesn't look like you put auto trans fluid in your diff based on the pic of what was drained out.
