Drain and fill shouldn't hurt since it's only like 4 quarts or so you can get out that way. Less than half the fluid. Since the fluid isn't lifetime or anything, it's way past due.

Check the color of the liquid. Ultimately you can get the fluid tested through your dealer to see if it is adequate for a full flush. We typically tell members only to do the drain and fill because if you have a weak transmission at the end of its life this can only cause problems.

full flush does not require you to go to dealer, you can do it at home. Doing a pan drain is not very efficient in your case, you are facing several issues.
1. You don't know if drain or flush was ever done before, if it was they might have used different fluid than you going to use and that might cause issues.
2. If your fluid was never changed, you have Nissan matic J in there, but it's so old that you might as well flush it all.

Follow this very simple video to flush your system with new fluid

Drain & fill with Valvoline multivehicle. Read the back label; it is a replacement for matic j, matic d, and so on. I did a drain & fill with it about 750 miles ago on my '05 sedan with 0 issue. It has 135k on it and I have no idea if the fluid was ever changed-I doubt it. I plan on doing the drain & fill several more times @ about 250 mile intervals until most of the fluid is new. Sort of like a gradual transfusion.

Only use the Nissan recommended fluid...nothing else!!!

You can do a drain & fill without issues! Find an independent shop that uses the correct fluid or Nissan since they charge far less than the Infiniti stealerships! If you discover the trans fluid really dark have it changed again in a few months for the health of your trans....Gary
