hacking stock shifter = short throw ?

I've heard on some shifters it's possible to mod the stem somehow and end up with essentially the same thing as an aftermarket short throw shifter. Has anyone looked into doing this on the G?

Note that I'm not talking about just shortening the top shaft, that won't have much effect on the "throw"...

I suppose it's always possible to do so long as you have the money. Since short throw shifters aren't that expensive you are just better off buying one that is pre-engineered. It's got R&D time and it's not one-off, so if there are any problems more often than not you can either (1) fix it, or (2) get it replaced under warranty.

shifters.

If the OEM shifter were long yes , it woull be possible, but it's really short to begin with, so attempting to modify the OEM shaft to displace the fulrum point woudl be nearly impossible. Just buy one of the couple SS shifters out there. Word of advice if you don't like rattles don't do it, I have used 3 diff models, BM, Rouge and Mossy, all resonate more than OEM. So be aware of the trade off. My current best compromise is the Rougue with the modified Mossy cup.

Thanks for the feedback, it got me thinking a little more about my actual issue with the stock setup. I sometimes hit the 2/4 divider when doing a quick 3-4 shift, maybe because of the angle or because the centering is a bit weak. I wonder if I can stiffen the centering on the stock unit somehow, maybe that would fix the problem?

Alternatively, is it possible to rotate the shifter clockwise slightly so my pulls are more in line with the shift guides? I am thinking this would not be possible as the shifter needs to be lined up with the tranny, but not sure...

I occasionally get the 3 to 4 problem too...I think I tend to pull a little too much towards me and get caught up in the gate.

I do not think rotating the shifter is possible since like you are saying there will be alignment issues with the transmission.

Try relaxing when shifting from 3rd to 4th. Instead of yanking real hard, just guide the shifter. The shifter has resistance getting to the 1/2 and 5/6 gates. If you pull real hard, and you are pulling slightly towards you, it is easy to over come the resistance. But if you pull more lightly, it should just follow it's natural path. Coincidentally, I find sometimes, the 5-6 shift is a bit harder as the resistance into the 5/6 gate seems excessive. It almost wants to pull it back into 4th.

I just recently got rid of the huge stock armrest and put in a low profile rest and the 3/4 problem is greatly improved but it still happens every now and then, most likely due to the weak centering.

I guess the one comment about going aftermarket because they are relatively cheap anyway is probably the best option. Guess it's time to order a B&M!
