Every now and then (maybe 2 out of 10 starts), my automatic transmission does not allow me to utilize the sports shift mode. I'll move the shifter to the right to engage, and it still shows "D". The only fix is to shut the car off and restart. Any idea why it does this? Is this common?

Mine does that very occasionally. I have 138k miles and the transmission still runs strong so I don't worry about it.
