Help me diagnose my clutch/flywheel problem?

Ever since I bought the car, it has had a weird clutch feel. When I press it in, it feels like there's some sort of obstruction that I push past about halfway down. In addition, it squeaks sometimes.

And then, once in awhile, all of the problems go away and the clutch feels buttery for 3-4 changes and then the issues come back. I'm about to have a shop do a rebuild, but just so I know they're not ripping me off, I wanted some ideas about what it might be. I know the squeak could be a throwout bearing or clutch release, but what about the "notch" in my clutch press?

Is the squeak coming from the pedal assembly or the transmission? There's a little spring in the clutch pedal assembly that was causing a squeak for me a while back, maybe something is caught between the coils, or the rubber boots it's on are messed up? It might be worth getting your head down there with a flashlight to check. I can't think of anything mechanical that would cause these issues without also leading to other problems pretty quickly.

Squeak sounds like it's coming from the pedal assembly, and it doesn't happen all of the time, just randomly. As for getting under the car, I can try but I don't really have a place to do it with street parking/don't know what I'm looking for.

Sorry, get under the dash, not the car itself. It's a little awkward, but I ended up laying on my back with my feet around the headrest to get a good look at it. Be sure to remove the dead pedal first for more room. Bring some WD40 or white lithium spray to lube the spring up while you're down there.

My shop confirmed that it's a problem inside the transmission. I can't remember exactly what they said, but they said that the labor cost of taking the transmission out + apart means it's really not worth it for me to fix it right now. They said I might as well run it for as long as I can deal with it, and then just replace everything at once, maybe in another 10k or something.
