Transmission Realignment
Transmission Realignment
Hi Everyone,
I am putting my transmission back onto the back of my engine. I am having trouble getting it to sit in the pilot bearing. Are there any tips and tricks I can try to and get to seat onto the pilot bushing? I have no trouble getting the splines to line up and align, only getting the front part of the input shaft into the pilot bushing.
Another Question, When installing the pilot bushing, how far in does it go? Does it sit flush with the outside around it or does it need to sit a little further in than that?
Thanks

Just set the pilot bushing flush with the front of the crankshaft, don't hammer it all the way in or you won't be able to use a puller to get it back out.
What did you use to put the pilot bushing in? Did you hammer directly on it and mushroom out the face slightly? If so you might need to use a file and slightly bevel that front edge if it rolled/mushroomed up.
Typically my method for putting the CD00A back in is to get it as close to mated as possible, then take the longer bellhousing bolts and thread them in as far as you can BY HAND, this will help keep the tranny aligned while you shake/push it around from the rear of the transmission.
Do NOT try to pull it flush by ratcheting those bolts down though, they're just finger tight to keep it aligned properly, once you work the transmission in a little more then finger tighten the bolts again, rinse/repeat until it's in all the way.

Thanks for the input. I used a rubber mallet and a socket to pound in the bushing flush with the crank surface around it. I will take a look if it was mushroomed at all and I'll also file the inner edge of it to get the input shaft in easier.
