Jdm vq35de non rev in a 03 sedan, bunch of goodies tomei camshaft.
Vq35de non rev timing, I知 so confused
This is how it says it should be Mine does not line up like the picture, this is not tdc but the yellow is clearly off from where it should be.
So I heard a timing chain rattle, it was pretty bad so I figured it was the main chain. I ordered tensioners and gilded and the chain and once I got the timing cover off I noticed the timing looks very off. Is it possible that the person who rebuilt this engine didn稚 orient the cam gears correctly but still timed it correctly? Also, the drivers side cam chain tensioner seems loose and bubbles when I press on it, it depresses easily. So my question is, is there a difference between the cam chain and main chain sounds when they池e rattling? I have plenty more vids and pics and if just one person who knows can help me out it would mean so much cause I started this job and now am not sure if I got the right parts. Also when I try to turn the engine by hand it goes for a bit and gets stuck, does this mean timing is off? I know this is a lot but that痴 why I知 here lol I知 so confused. I need a more experienced person to help me out, maybe even dm to look at some more videos because those will definitely help. I can even pay someone to video call and take a look, please.
For starters, were you on TDC cylinder 1 when you started?
Secondly, I wouldn't go off that picture you found. Stick to the factory service manual, section EM - Engine Mechanical. Here's a snippet of the correct timing chain installation picture.
Lastly, if the engine is binding up and won't rotate smoothly (with the spark plugs removed) then you're definitely zero clearancing the valves onto the pistons, don't try to force it or you'll be taking the heads off to replace bent valves. If it is hitting then you need to just unbolt all the camshafts, set the crank at TDC1, then set the cams, then torque everything down, THEN install the chains.
Also, a rattling chain isn't usually the chain itself, usually you just need to replace the timing chain tensioner. The chain is technically good for the life of the motor.
