Tough 2nd Gear

Lately my second gear has been getting really hard to engage, I have to push hard to get it in... I have no idea what is going on, and it's scary because I misshifted for the first time because of it. I have no idea what is causing it?

I have a slight grind going into second every now and then, I would say every 1/10 shifts. There is nothing you can do to fix it unless you want to do some serious tranny work. My advice to you, and what I am planning to do, is to wait until it gets bad enough to the point where the dealer can't deny the problem as a misaglined windshield wiper or inproperly inflated tires and have them fix it.

Unfortunately, our 6mt trannies have been dropping like flies. Plenty of people have had there trannies replaced and some more than once. I am still crossing my fingers and hoping for a TSB on them, ha when pigs fly!

Good luck!

G35sandiego, I too have problems with my 2nd gear and i have been racking my mind as to if its me inproperly shifting or the car itself. It feels like it grabs a little late and i get that jerking motion. Same as you? I have also looked in the TSBs and nothing.

Mine has been grabbing really late and I dont realize it until I go to give it gas and revs. Usually happens when I am shifting quickly. It's strange because this never has happened until like 3 weeks ago. Since then it's happened thrice.

When my 1st to 2nd grind occurs you can feel it thorugh the shifter. A slight grind sound and a quick jolt through the shifter right before it fully goes into gear. The driver can definately feel it, but a passenger might not notice.

I think we have the same symptom. Hell I might try changing the tranny oil to something high performance, but I don't think that will do much.

With the combination of clutch chatter and now this intermitent grinding, I can't help but wonder why Nissan hasn't post a TSB for a least a partial fix.

The car is up for an oil change soon and I might try my luck with the dealer since I'm there. Let you guys know what happens.

G35sandiego, I'm not getting the grinding noise, just the late grab on the gear and that jerking motion follows. I have been trying different shift patterns, I usually shift in normal driving between 3500-4000 rpm range. I have altered that to see if I can pin point it to be me improperly shifting or or the vehicle. I don't get it all the time. I even had a friend drive it and they experienced the same a few time going to 2nd, so i'm assuming for now that it has to be the tranny.

Guys take your car in...its the syncros in the tranny and the dealer will have to order a new tranny, takes about a week and the dealer didnt give me any hassle with this one... the new trans feels great too... like the day i got my car...they can usually tell right away when they have the car up in the air... first thing they do is check the trans oil for metal debris...thats how they found out about mine right away... hope this helps u guys...dont waste ur time buying any additives or what not...no charge here...
