Question I need a new clutch... Help!

My clutch has started slipping on my 04 coupe so I need some advice on what clutch I should get... I like it to be better then stock but nothing to crazy. How much am I looking at spending for the clutch and install? Should I do any other mods while I'm down there? Thanx for any help you can give!

Jacob

I just had my clutch replaced on my 04. I only have about 6000 miles. It wasn't slipping but I was getting chatter. The tech took it for a test drive and said I needed a new clutch. It was always really stiff... I thought it was supposed to be that way. Turns out the pad was worn and the pressure plate was.... I don't remember the term used... but there were marks on it from excessive heat and that's what made the pedal feel stiff. Now i know what you're thinking... but I don't drive the car hard nor do I ride the clutch.
Once they took the tranny apart the service manager said my flywheel had a few spots on it caused by heat as well however it was still usable but would cause some mild chatter.

Got the car back... Man what a difference! It felt better then new. AND no chatter. The pedal feels a lot softer and the engagement point is lower. Overall the car is much nicer to drive, especially in stop and go traffic.

sorry for the long post... i just had to throw in my 2 cents:

But I did do some homework before I brought the car in.
The clutch itself isn't that expensive BUT if you've damaged your flywheel it's CRAZY expensive.

If I had to replace my flywheel I would have bought an Exedy Hyper single clutch. It's $$$$ but not that much more than what the dealer would charge you for a stock clutch and flywheel. I think you would be within $500-600 more than if you replaced stock parts. But you can beat on this clutch and it would last a long time. It also comes with a light flywheel.

There is no cheap option for our car right now. No matter what manuf. you go with, they only seem to make expensive replacement parts for our car.

If you don't plan on modded the car to get crazy power (FI) the JWT clutch and flywheel are a good combo for about $700. Install could be anywhere from $300-$500.

I'm getting the Tilton Full Street clutch and flywheel for $1000 from Performance Nissan and it's going to cost $300 for the install from Aamco. Infiniti said it be min. 8hrs at $92 an hour!

8 hours? i dont know why it would take that long to do the clutch, did they include a 2 hour lunch break and an hour to resurface the flywheel?

My car grinds b/t 2nd and 3rd, and b/t 3rd and 4th. the dealer told me it's because my clutch is bad and so is not disengaging all the way. furthermore, the clutch still grabs great, no slippage. they want to charge $900 to install a new one. I only have 40k on the car, and it's mostly highway, i have only driven MTs and have NEVER burned it (I usually get the car moving without having to give it any revs.) Does it sound to anyone else like i'm being screwed for defective syncros?

I don't think it is you clutch. It sound like the syncros. Even a bad clutch will disingage. DO NOT LET THAT DEALER WORK ON YOUR CAR!!. Syncros are not a cheap problem but if they replace the clutch it will not fix the problem. Syncros are a cheap part but are inside the transmission.
A quick check would be to let the clutch out in neutral between shifts. This will "spin up" and syncronize the shaft speed in the transmission. This might be covered under warrenty.
