downshift using automatic transmission problem?
downshift using automatic transmission problem?
Hi everyone I am new to the board. I just bought a g35 coupe about 2 weeks ago, and reluctantly traded my black track 350Z in on it. I did this because I just had a child and the on off air bag switch that could be added to the Z was costly and NO guarantee that it would not go off. So I went with what and some others call the 2+2 Z
I am very happy so far with the 500 miles it has been driven. I have a question for people who have an automatic transmission. When I use the auto stick (if that is what it is called) and downshift from 3rd to second between 20-25mph I get a terrible jerk with the car. It almost feels like I hit a speed bump. When I do it above 30mph there is not problem. It only happens in-between that speed. I did a search on the board but did not find anything. Has anyone else had this issue? Thank you for your time and look forward to being a good contributor to the board

Re: downshift using automatic transmission problem?
From what I know thats normal and it happens to all or almost all auto g's. It happens to mine. Also when you are in 2nd and you come to a stop it happens. I must say that after I installed the grounding kit it seems to happen way less often and when it does its less harsh. But if you are coming to stop dont shift to 2nd let the tranny do it for you from 3rd, you will get a smooth stop 100% of the time.
Re: downshift using automatic transmission problem?
I figured out that shifting from 3rd to 2nd is best at 1,000 RPMs. Wait until your car is around there, and the down shift to 2nd will be as smooth as butter. As G35Gnome mentioned, I would let the car downshift for me when I am coming to a complete stop, instead of downshifting from second to first. It seems like there is no way to avoid the jerky motion while downshifting from 2nd to 1st, so it's best to let the car downshift it for you from 3rd to 1st. I hope this helps, and good luck.

Re: downshift using automatic transmission problem?
I have to agree, after installing the hyper ground wires/ hyper voltage system....downshifting from 3rd to 2nd was much smoother. But then I do the shifting at 1500 RPM's. Before, it would jerk the car.
Re: downshift using automatic transmission problem?
I love those wires...the VQ is like the butterery straight sixes of the Toyota, BMW likes but with all the power and durability thanks to these wires...How is it that guys like gordon are one upping the manufacturer and substantially improving the car for 80 bucks...I bet grounds become OE soon.
Re: downshift using automatic transmission problem?
when i downshift to 2nd i give it a very small amount of gas at the same time and it shifts very smooth.
