New G/car enthuisist questions
New G/car enthuisist questions
Ok, so im getting a G35 near the end of this year, '04 sedan with 5 AT. This is actually my first car, and before you all start calling me a spoiled brat, know that im splitting it with my dad (which is why im getting a sedan instead of coupe, and AT instead of MT). Ive been really into cars for a couple years, but mainly just knowledge, nothing hands on. First i would like to know if adding aftermarket parts like the 350Z tube, stillen air intake, and such would void the warranty on the G. Second, i would like to know what the ECU is, and what resetting it does, and why the ECU should be reset when the 350Z tube/stillen air intake is installed. Also, what are the custom grounding cables for, and where can they be purchased. Thanks so much.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
I'll try to answer your questions as best I can..
1 - Adding the 350z duct, Stillen intake, etc will not void your warranty in its entirety. Some dealerships will look right past it and not say a thing. Other people have had negative experiences with the dealer when they have engine related problems the dealer will sometimes point towards their mods as the cause as an easy way out. The general rule is, adding a mod to the car will void the warranty on that particular piece. Hence, you add aftermarket drop kit to the car, and the suspension blows, you are gonna foot the bill.
2 - The ECU is a computer that "learns" your driving habits and modifies the algorithms the car uses to determine things such as shift points, shift speed, etc. It's basic goal is to tune the cars performance for the best fuel economy and overall life. However, as it does this, in most cases it reduces the overall performance of the car by slowing the shift speed, shifting at different points, etc. Resetting the ECU will remove all this learned memory and restore the original performance and "feel" of the car. Any time you add a mod, you need to reset the ECU so it learns the performance of the car with these new mods. Many people reset their ECU once every week or two using the "easy" method. Some owners also do a monthly "cold" reset by unplugging the battery for 12 hours. There is alot of information on both these procedures in this forum.
3 - I am not an expert on the grounding cables, but I believe they reduce starting time on the engine, make the overall performance of the engine a littler sharper, and allow the car to idle more efficiently.
I'm sure others will respond with more info. Good luck with your new G, I think you'll love it.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
sweet man, thinks for the info. My question would be then, adding the 350Z duct and stillen intake would void what parts of the engine?(yes im a newbie)

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
From reading other posts, i have some more qestions. What is WOT, and dyno, and can the plenum crawford be used in conjunction with the 350Z duct and stillen intake, and would there performance boosts cancel each other out, or stack up (ie-6500 rpms=290 hp)
Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
The duct and intake would of course replace the stock G duct with the resonators to smooth out airflow, and the Stillen box replaces the stock box and filter with a high flow cone filter and box.

Man, you've got a lot of questions!
WOT=wide open throttle
Dyno= dynamometer runs on a machine that measures HP and torque.
You should be able to use the various mods together for a cumulative effect.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
i know ive got a lot, but thanks a ton for helping me out. Id also like it if you could tell me where these dyno machines are because after i upgrade id like to see what my HP is.
Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
Just phone around to some of your local high performance shops. They should be able to tell you where to do dyno runs in your area.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
Just an fyi, when people throw out dyno numbers, %99 percent of the time they are talking about rwhp (rear wheel horsepower) not engine horsepower. When you hear HP numbers on TV they are talking engine horse power. Most mods are rated in rwhp. You may already know that but I figured I would point it out to you just incase.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
RWHP "rear wheel horse power" is the HP at the wheel
engine horse power, is the HP at the crank right outside the engine...
Becuase of friction and other factors the HP right outside the engine decreases by the time it hits the rear wheels.

Re: New G/car enthuisist questions
Well I'm glad I decided to point that out for you then. :-)Ericinmia did a pretty good job explaining the differences. Basically power that leaves the engine is lost by the time it gets to the rear wheels (drive train, friction, etc.). So while the G35c has 280hp it has only about 242rwhp. Approximately 38hp was lost along the way. So if you add something like a Borla exhaust system it will give you gains of around 14rwhp which would bring the coupe up to 256rwhp and put the power at the engine around 305hp. The reason all these mods are rated in rwhp is because they put the car on a dyno to measure the gains. The dyno is basically a big roller that the rear wheels are placed on and then the car is accelerated to various speeds (kind of like a human on a treadmill) and they use the information collected to come up with rwhp because obviously the power they are measuring is at the rear wheels. It's a relatively cheap yet effective way for aftermarket manufacturers to measure gains from their products. I hope this helps to shed more light on the subject for you.
