First Oil Change Questions

I am sure this has been covered, but I didnt see a specific answer to my question when I did some searching. I just did my first oil change and had my first encounter with the worst oil dipstick ever made. Everything went smooth, took a bit to find a good jack point, then took a bit to find all the 10mm bolts to remove to get to the oil pan and filter. Drained the oil, and got the oil filter off after some fighting. Cleaned everything back up, put her back on the ground, and put in around 4.8quarts of oil. I had the 5quart/4.73 liter jug of mobile 1 from walmart and there is a little bit of oil left in the jug. I didn't pour the whole thing in because I know you don't usually get every last bit of oil out when you change your oil. Then cranked it up to check for any lights and any leaks. No lights and no leaks to be found, shut off the car and tried to check my oil level using the dipstick from hell. I could never get a straight reading from the dipstick. Hell half the time there was oil all the way up the rod. So my main question is, how do I know if I put in too much oil and what could be the possible complications if I did?

Thanks for anyone suggestions.

You have to wait a long time after shutting down (at least 30 mins) to get a good reading. The dipstick also has to be seated properly prior to being pulled. It is one of the worst designs - everyone agrees.

Too many bolts to remove for the undercover - too bad there isn't a subpanel with just a few bolts for just the oil and filter...

That helps a bit. I just went back out and checked it again and the reading was a little easier to read. Solid oil up to almost the middle of the hashes between L and H and then splotches of oil elsewhere on the dipstick. Thanks for the reply. Now I can go to bed and not worry that I destroyed my G.
