Why do we need a 'learning algorithm'

I've been reading some posts on it, and so far it seems like a stupid idea- if i drive 'nicely' most of the time, the few times i romp it it'll act like [censored]...so i've got to unplug the battery each time i want to really use it (i.e., goto te track). That's stupid
