My friend's 90 LX notch has the same issue, but revving up that motor was pure sex I will have a LX notch!!!

I can't see the oem pulley being a dampener. IMHO, the rubber ring is much too thin to do anything. Maybe to soften the accessory shock but that's it. Again IMHO.

The oem pulley is balanced but so are the aftermarket units. Only if the oem unit was balanced with the crank and flywheel (if installed) would it "might" make a diff. But I highly doubt Nissan really balances them out that much.
I had a UR UDP on my Maxima too. Yep, my VQ revved a bit quicker, but the pulley also introduced some grainy vibrations through the shifter and pedals the car never had prior to the UDP. After 40 passes in various conditions and a couple dyno passes, the verdict on my VQ30 was absolutely no change in performance. No gain on the dyno. According to the slips, the car was actually a few hundreths slower on average. I sold the pulley, the VQ30 velvety smoothness returned.

You can trust me on this, the VQ pulley is indeed a damper. It is the same exact pulley design that was used on my 94 Z28, my wife's Legacy GT, my friends M3, and another friends 3000GT VR4. All the manuals specifically refer to the crank pulley as a crank damper. Interestingly, UDPs for LT1s (94 Z28) require that you remove the crank pulley, install the UDP, and then install the crank pulley back on, technically piggy-backing the UDP.

You're right in that the UDPs are balanced, but they are not balanced to the VQ crank.

Neither is the oem one IMHO. The crank and pulley would have to be balanced together. Which I highly doubt they are. That leads me to believe the oem pulley is balanced. But on it's own.

The pulley I had on my car actually failed on me and damaged my crank as well... I had to get my crank and bearings replaced... Needless to say for the small amount of gain I will not be running any type of lightweight pullies again...

What brand of pulley was that?

I've had my UR UDP on my maxima for almost 90k miles with no issues... It seems to rev up quicker in first gear, but after that, no difference...

Yeah... That was not a fun day, could have blown my engine... I was off by 3 degrees of timing when I brought her in to see what was wrong.

I am not sure about the brand name anymore on the pulley.

Here is a pic of the key, you can imagine what the end of my crankshaft looked like.

Wow- that is bad but could have been REAL bad. It might be helpful for other G35'ers if you could find out what brand pulley that was. Sorry that it failed on you. Judging by your sig/ looks like you put some pretty good torque/pressure on that badboy to make it pop like that.

I am just glad that there are (as I figured) no reports of our VQ blowing up because of a balancing issue. - and I do NOT want that argument re-hashed.. LOL

i guess it is a bit odd that there's a chunk out of it/ and the missing chunk was there too.. hmm- could they have done that prying the damn thing off?

If it blew while you were driving/ how would they have the missing chunk?

don't know- just never thought of that until mr. pharmd brought it up.

LONG LIVE THE PULLEY!!!!

I really believe it was the fault of the person taking it off or installing it. I just took off my UR pulleys (all 3 pulleys) and I have no problems what so every. I really dont know how it would break off by itself.
