Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Pull

Anybody installed, or thinking about installing a set of Unorthodox Pulleys (Crank, Alternator and Idler)? Thought / comments?

From Stillen's site:

In reply to:

Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Set (Ultra SS) pulleys. Made of lightweight Premium 6061-T6 billet aluminum to ensure consistency of the material's strength and balance. CNC machined to .001". This is the complete Street pulley set that consist of the Ultra S crank pulley as well as all of the Ultra A accessory pulleys for each application. An average of 8 to 15 HP and 6 to 10 lbs.-ft. on normally aspirated engines and 10 to 18 HP and 10 to 20 lbs.-ft. on forced induction engines. Higher gains can be realized on modified engines. Power gains are obtained in two ways. First, and most important, is the weight loss. An average of 2.7 HP is gained from every pound lost off the crank shaft. With the lighter accessory pulleys, as much as 15% to 30% more power can be found. 85% of our gains are from weight loss. The rest of the gains are from underdriving, which accounts for about 15% of the total gains. Underdriving is not pushed for two main reasons. The main reason is to keep charging systems, air conditioning, power steering, and water pumps moving fast enough for every day driving. Second, not much horsepower is gained from extreme underdriving. In most applications all of the underdriving is done with the crank pulley, not the accessory pulleys. This is done so maximize weight loss can be achieved at the crank where most of the horsepower gains are found. If you're not ready for the Ultra Street Set, you can start off by getting the Ultra S crank pulley then later date upgrade to an Ultra SS kit with the purchase of the Ultra A pulleys.

Only one thought.

Unless the alloy used is first rate, with the heat and revolutions they face inder the hood, sometimes they crack.

Re: Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Pull

I have it on my sedan on the advice of SGP Racing. Here's another recent thread that has a different opinion:

I have them, but I havent installed them.
I'm afraid that it might mess the engine up. I heard alot of horror stories on how people have been throwing rods and blowing the engine up. I dont think thats a risk I want to take for just 5 more hp.

Re: Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Pull

I have them and love them, I was scared to put them on at first too, I contacted UR racing via email, http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/ on the subject and the president of the company replied back to me. I posted his response in one of these threads somewhere, It might be on my350z.com. you can contact them yourself or do more searches. Good Luck.

I have them and I love them. NO problems what so ever. All those horror stories are what they are stories. Think about it, if they are throwing rods and the like they were doing a whole lot more than just adding a pulley. A pulley is not going to make you throw a rod, now revving the engine past redline or keeping it at redline there for long periods of time, now that WILL do bad things.

Well I'm sure the pulleys werent installed right either. If I were to put them in I would do it myself just so I know it was done right.
Maybe if UR gave me some kind of guarantee that it wouldnt mess up the engine, I would def do it.

Re: Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Pull

Gnome: I dont have these.. I have the lightweight flywheel.. I was wondering about these too.. I was about to order them then seen people posting dont buy them.. So I rather wait and findout all the info then find out the hard way. If I were to install them I would have my Infiniti guy do it as i trust him most he sees these cars everyday.. He knows these cars inside out and does work for me VERY cheep.. I wouldnt trust myself in doing it as i hear its very hard to take the OEM ones off.. ANd when I put the new ones I would be scared that I didnt torque them enough or too little.. Plus when you do something to your car there is always a lil secret that you dont know about unless you are in the buss or do it alot.. I also would feel a lot better if i had a lil warranty on the motor..

But all I heard was that the new pullies cause more vibrations on the crank.. thats about it.. So if someone with lots of experiance please step forward and help us out with the pros and cons here..

Thanx

Re: Unorthodox Racing Ultra Street Pull

"But all I heard was that the new pullies cause more vibrations on the crank.. thats about it"

-That's pretty much it. I put rogue engineering pulleys/belt on my 330i. The new pulleys were lighter than the stock and thus change the factory "harmonic tone"(a little noise, kinda like a rattle). It wasn't that big a deal. BUT I didn't change the crankshaft pulley. I'm not sure if Nissan has an integral harmonic damper (used to balance the end of the engine's crankshaft) ,but removing the harmonic balancer jeopardizes the integrity of the crankshaft as well as the associated components.

Here's the break down on which pulleys I'd consider changing:

Power Steering Pump - reduce the fluid resistance in the pump itself. Although reducing its theoretical efficiency at higher RPMs, a power steering pump's main benefit is at lower speeds (like in parallel parking situations), which negate the need for high RPM operation.

Water pump. - underdrive this pulley to reduce its fluid
resistance without affecting engine cooling operation. Testing has shown that from idle to higher RPMs, with and without load, engine operating temperatures were not measurably affected.

The benefit of new pulleys is to reduce the drag on specific pulleys while allowing others to remain at their same efficiency. This allows for perfect operation in daily driven vehicles without a hiccup or stutter. However, when the demand of power is requested, the power pulley kit allows for the freed power to become apparent.

** I plagiarized the Rogue site for this info **
