Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Thank you to everyone for your input into the matter and concerns.
I indeed overcorrected, it is just night-and-day difference compared to the summer weather.
Anyway, i do have a set of snows Pirelli 210s on KA3's 17x7.5
Will these give me better cold-tire traction?? I wouldnt think so because of the smaller footprint.... but then again i've read that the Pilots are some of the best heat-dissipating tires on the market...which would explain why they SUCK for cold weather driving (not including snow)

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
the snows should be a lot better because its such a softer compond. I am putting mine on, on friday. But it snowed all last night and i was like wow this sucks i cant have any fun.
Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Rambo:
The footprint is the least important factor in cold weather driving. Tire compound is the most important, followed by tread pattern. In fact, the smaller footprint is better on snow and ice as it 'bites' better into the slippery stuff! If foot print and contact patch were everything, we'd be driving racing slicks around all the time!

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Hey guys, a newbie here. You might all want to try letting some air out of the tires in Winter. It's the same principle as driving on loose sand, the softer ride will give better traction on the snow. I did it last year here in Nashville, we had 13" of snow and I was sticking to the road fine with the VDC on.
Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Come on guys, leave the computer assistance on when conditions aren't ideal and you aren't alone on the road. It's one thing if you wreck your own G, that's your privilege, but I'm going to be pissed if you also wreck my G along the way. Makes me think I should be more upset about the auto-VDC off kit. That's like an auto-exceed-the-speed-limit kit. There are times and places for both, but it's probably not every single morning when you get in your car. Besides, who knows what it does to your insurance if they can determine that the switch was off at the time of impact.
(To the original poster: not really ranting at you, it sounds like the conditions didn't seem that bad and you were caught off guard.)

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
JDMan, I don't care so much about property damage. I'm bothered most by the reckless people who endanger, injure, and kill innocent people through ignorance, carelesness, and false illusions of their own ability. I'm not saying any posters here necessarily fit into this category mind you, I'm just saying where the real problem is.
I still remember a family of four that got T-boned by a 20-year old "kid" in a Prelude because he was going too fast and lost control. There were minor injuries to everyone except the 4 year old girl who died in my ambulance on the way to the hospital. I still see the faces of that family, counting on me and my crew to save that girl as we drove away. Somewhere, that "kid" is out there, still living whith what he did; it must be horrible. I've lost a son as well, and can tell you there is no way to express the loss, grief, and the hole left behind.
Drive safely. Don't be the one that destroys lives (including your own).

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
You should only turn off the VDC when you are going to drive "spiritedly" with 110% mental concentration on the road. For all other times, it should be on to cover your @$$. Having it off for the daily commute to work "just because" is begging for trouble, and a bad habit to get into. It doesn't matter how good a driver you are, in a situation like that, the VDC system is faster than you are at correcting the car and keeping you in your lane and on your intended course.

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Me and my 4 rims and tires say amen to that brotha.
I would only turn off to do some wheel spin *** throws and turn it back on. The moron who cut me off and made a left in front of me from the right lane while I was doing 40 4 weeks ago taught me to keep it on. Woulda had to get it towed off the courthouse planter otherwise and bought 4 new rims/tires - assuming the suspension and drivetrain were OK. I think the times when people need it the most - they tend to be turning it off...at least that was me until now.

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
Wow! You can't understate the importance either. Have you ever heard about letting some air out of your tires to get a bigger footprint thus more traction in the snow? This even works on mud driving. I lived in Alaska 4 years, so I think I can speak on the subject.
Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports
I agree with ryoken. Only turn it off when condition is 100% and you plan on having some fun while giving 100% concentration. I doubt that anybody has 100% concentration all the time, it's hard to do.
