I'm thinking about updating the ignition system a bit, just wondering if the coilpacks should be upgraded?

They are replacable, but I don't think there are aftermarket replacements. The coil pack ignition on these cars is extremely powerful. There is no need to change it.

Yeah. It would take some serious mods to outrun the capacity of the factory ignition.

Coil packs might just be the most expensive mod on earth, on a HP gained per dollar spent basis.

I bet the factory coil packs would hold up to 60 psi at like .017 - .020 gap.

Absolutely no reason whatsoever to be using some kind of high performance aftermarket coil packs at $200 apiece when you can get a full set of OEM Hitachi units for the same price FOR ALL SIX.

Very true.
z1motorsports and conceptZ sell all kinds of coil packs for our cars.

Im going to get a new set of oem coil packs for my g35. I’m sure my current packs have been revised by Nissan a couple times since 2006, I’ll have to look up the current part number and compare it to the packs I have and see how many reversions there where.

im still using oem plugs with oem gap.
just got new cam/crank sensors and will replace them tomorrow. Already thinking of changing the plugs again but will change them after I get new coil packs and just change it as a set.

Ignition mods are generally overrated. Never could really tell a difference between a single point vs dual point vs electronic ignition conversion other than with the election ignition I didn't have to set the dwell anymore. And MSD5A? Couldn't really tell anything either. And this was on a 1971 Chevelle, not a modern car with crank triggered ignition with individual coils. Had an Accel coil in my Cutlass with the HEI ignition, no difference there, other than the Jacobs coil looking nicer than OEM, no difference on a Celica I used to have either.

A properly functioning OEM modern ignition system is really good as is.

If you're running like 60 lbs of boost then yeah upgraded coil packs are a good idea. By that point you've got tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in the car and probably a years worth of work so going with a reputable higher-than-stock coil pack (that won't last as long due to heat) is worth the $1000 or so.

That's like 0.0001% of cars out there. For the rest of us the OEM option is definitely the best option.

First, sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead...

Second, there was an AUDI R8 coil pack upgrade available for the VQ35DE. I had it and was running it on my '07 FX35 for a few years before I sold it. By far the best dollar for dollar bolt-on power mod I did. Now it's just sitting in storage collecting dust so if anyone in the Toronto area is interested, drop me a PM.

The VQ's are great engines and the FM platform was great! Too bad INFINITI is moving away from what made them moderately successful and going after the soccer mom crowd after building a strong base of performance enthusiasts. My FX had custom coilovers, dropped almost 5 inches and tons of extra bracing to make her so responsive and flat through turns (S-curves weren't great as you can't fool physics ALL the time!!!)... Loved that car and still miss it!!!
