Which Synthetic Oil to Use

I've searched the forums thoroughly and this question has never been answered.

Which Synthetic Oil to use? 5w30? or 10w30? or 10w40? Does anyone know which one the dealer uses?

I run 5w30 all year long...some people do it only when it gets colder, but you can run mobil 1 or if you want to crank out some more cash you can get amsoil...royal purple oil is only good for 3k no mas...mobil 1 i run for about 4500 to 5000 and amsoil u can do for 7500 to 8000 just make sure you use a GOOD filter...pure one, mobil 1, amsoil, or kn

I have been using amsoil for the last 11,000 miles or so and K&N filter, I just dropped my car off at ramsey infiniti today for 15k mile maintanance. They will use my own oil and filter and the guy there, mario(good guy, btw) said amsoil is really good.

I use 5W30 Castrol Syntec all year up here in Canada. If I lived in a warmer climate, I'd go for 10W30 but there's not much difference in the 2. Some use Amsoil, others Mobil 1.
I use the OEM filter and the filter for the Maxima which is slightly larger.

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

I've learned from an AMSOIL tech that I could run 5W-30 or 10W-30 all year long. Anyway, I use the AMSOIL 5W-30 because at the dealership they said that when they go and look at my service records if I need warranty work that they will look for 5W-30 to verifiy that it was used. But that is what he said. Why don't you just call your dealership and ask? That is what they are there for.

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

Quick question, what if we don't take our G to the dealer for service? If you were to buy Mobile 1 synthetic 5w30 oil and replace it yourself, how would the dealer know? Would they be using maintenance record when we take the car in for maintenance? But then they would be missing service records... Would that void the warranty? Just a thought.....

Northface - Where did you get these mileages from? I'm an engineer for Shell & have seen lab tests clearly showing that a typical synthetic oil is good for 15,000 - 25,000 miles IF kept clean. I wouldn't personally take it that far but I run 5W-30 Royal Purple for 10,000 miles with a filter change every 5000. Never had a problem yet & it makes things more cost prohibitive. Just curious.

Toofast did you ever consider using the Amsoil 0w-30w sythetic? That's what was recommended to me since I live in they bay area.

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

OvaYahead, the only reason I considered using the 0w-30 is because I had read someone on here mentioning that they were using it. And think it was you. But I asked the dealership and they said that they wanted me to go with 5w-30. I also replaced the tranny fluid with AMSOIL gear lube and it seems to help a little bit from what I have noticed. I like most that it will have better protection now. How long are you going to go until your next oil change? The dealership told me 7500 miles but I think that I could easily stretch it out to 12,000 and that is when they say you need to change the oil filter anyway.

nope it wasn't me. I never tried 0w-30w, but was thinking about it. I'm just trying to find people that have tried it and tell me what the benefits are. Other then that I'm just going to use 5-30. very true you still need to change the oil filter and I always do that before 4k.

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

One of the problems with 0 weight oils is leaks, so be carefull, i would go minimum 5-30 weight.
I have also heard good things about Amsoil,
In my others cars I have always used Castrol Syntex, for instance my 91Maxima is still alive at 197000 Mi. and no oil consumption at all!! My intervals have been 5000 miles. 6000 max.
I am going to use the same intervals in my "G" but I may go amsoil or mobil 1

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

The only experience I have with 0W-30 is using a semi-synthetic in my snowblower. Great for the cold weather and my John Deer usually starts on the 1st pull. Don't even have to use the electric starter!

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

thanks tsguru and gordee.
That's why I was told 0-30 might be good for the G. It'll have smooth quick starups.

I'm currently using castro syntec, but heard bad things about it.

LOL gordgee, I'm glad your snowblower likes the 0-30. Does it leak at all?

Does 0-30 leak because it's so thin it just slips by a bad drain plug?

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

No leaks with the snowblower. Since it's such a thin oil, any seals that may be compromised may develop a leak, especially when the engine is cold and before the parts have a chance to warm and expand I believe. Here in the frozen north where for about 2 weeks a year, the temps dip to -30 C to -40 C! The 5W-30 does fine. Cranks over no problem. Good idea to plug the block heater in though as it's easier on the engine.

Re: Which Synthetic Oil to Use

I have just ordered 2 pails of FUCHS Titan UNIC 10w-40 from Germany. There are alot of Z33 racers that use this in japan and think its the best thing. I thought I would try since its only $55 for 5gal. and the viscosity test where better than Mobil1. The only thing is that no one in the US sells it. So you have to import it.
