Why is the torque level on the new G35 low?

there wont be any parts for the G37 for a few months seeing how it's a brand new motor. You'll have to give companies time to R&D parts, but as with the last generation G, there will be plenty of go-fast mods including FI to increase power.

Torque is bascily a function of displacement. Of course it depends on head design etc.. but basicly that's it.
HP is a function of head design and rpm. With the advent of varible timing cams, hp can be increased and the torque curved moved. But the torque doesn't increase that much.
The Honda 1.8 liter VTEC engine is a great example. Look how much hp it made. A whooping 185hp out of 1.8 liters. Very good. The varible lift cam system really allows the engine to breath in the upper rpm range. Now look at the torque. Peak torque is only about 135 ftlbs or so. About the same as the non-VTEC 1.8 liter engine.

Assuming weight is the same, the car with the largest powerband wins races. If torque truely won races, as Mr. Carrol Shelby always proclaimed, then people would be trying to stuff 700-1,000wtq turbo diesels into their drag cars. The main reason why the new VQ35 and VQ37 don't make a lot more torque than the motors they replace is because Nissan focused HP. The way to effectively increase HP is allow the motor to breath harder as the rpms increase. The new VQ motors makes use of an additional 1000rpms of rev and that is where most of the additional power is found. Like Jeff pointed out, torque tends to come from displacement and it's pretty hard to improve torque across the entire powerband.

A little more stroke, a tad more compression, and of course nobody has figured out yet that Nissan degreed in the cams with more retard.
That will move the power band up in the RPM's. That extra stroke was needed for torque and HP.
