Mechanical Maintenance
Mechanical Maintenance
Got a few questions regarding the subject. When is the best time to do a tune up (plugs, etc) and what parts do you include in a "tune-up?" Also, is there any additives or something of the sort that some of you swear by? (i.e. injector cleaner, oil additives, etc) What do you think is the most crucial maintenance item/procedure (i don't mean oil changes)? Hopefully I posted this in the right forum.

Techron is a good fuel additive. Using Chevron gas w/ techron regularly will help maintain the performance of your car. Unfortunately, for me at least, there aren't that many Chevron stations. You can also try BG44k fuel additive.
Ethanolized fuel is the big unknown as the combustion creates new compounds that were not considered in designing the engine.
Unfortunately the detergents that clean injectors may create deposits on the piston crown and the converse with combustion cleaners. So a good idea to alternate cleaners over the year.
I would examine the interior bottom of gas tank every 60K to make sure no water rust dirt had accumulated. The ethanol makes it seriously more critical.
Techron in gasoline needs different detergents to clean it up.
Remember the magic secret sauce is just splash blended into the tanker trucks during filling at the minimum legal limit.
IsoHeet, Techron, BG44k should be a part of every cars medicine cabinet.
Oil additives are problematic because they may adversely react with the additives already in the oil...............Good quality oil should be all ones needs until after 100k.
I use BG 111/MOA as a method to reinforce the low Zinc DP levels in Mobil 1 Syn.
Modern bucket valve lifters often need shim changes as they wear and increase noise.
Oem or any air filter may not be good enough at filtering MICRON sized particles to minimize wear and allow 500,000 miles without ring wear.
Add extra fine filter AFTER oem filters.
Cold cranking when oil has no lubricity until 150F causes the most wear add a oil/coolant heater that plugs in and maintains warm liquids.
