Re: G35C Vs BMW850
Interesting post for an unusual comparison.
But in fact, the car I was looking for, before I decided to buy the G coupe, was the BMW 850 CSi, which is the 6mt version. There are relatively few of them in the US, I think in fact only around 250 because they cost around a $100k new, and alas used they still run north of $50k if you can find one in good condition and an owner willing to part with it.
But be careful with assumptions about performance. The 850 went through some different iterations. The 1991 Ci, even with manual, had a relatively lower output motor, so with the substantial additional weight of the car, it would not be a surprise to see it perform comparably to the G. There were a couple of years when the manual with the upgraded engine, around 400hp, was available, and I rather suspect that model would put the hurt on a G coupe. The eight cylinder 840 produced very comparable performance to the twelve cylinder 850, and cost a lot less to purchase and to maintain.
Drive either one, however, and marvel at the quality and performance of a car that was 80's technology. It is a remarkable automobile, even though it has been out of production for six or seven years now.
But to go back to a valid point not to be lost, for something around $35k today you can get a car that performs very favorably to a car that cost $80k+ a decade ago from a famous marque. That is astounding value indeed.
And, for what it is worth, I still think the lines of the 840/850 coupe are marvelous. A beautiful looking machine with lines that still appeal.
