Major accel hesitation G35 5AT?

First off I'd just like to say hi; this is my first post and I couldn't find anything regarding my question so here goes.

I just bought my 2004 G35 Coupe 2 days ago, 5 speed automatic and noticed some severe hesitation when giving it a decent amount of gas. I noticed it today really badly when I was going about 40 and hit the gas to get on the highway. The RPM's went so high it made me look down at the tac and it was reading at least 4500 before I finally got some actual acceleration. Is this normal while leaving it in automatic opposed to using the shift stick option?

From what I can tell there is no hesitation treating it as a pseudo-manual transmission, but in full automatic there is some major hesitation going on. It wasn't a big deal until today when the RPM's went from 2500 to 4500 without getting ANY acceleration at all for at least a second and a half.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same year and tranny and have no hesitation at all. You should be pushed back in your seat almost instantly. There may be hesitation if you floor it - the transmission will downshift to a lower gear to put you in the higher part of the power band but this is common to many (if not most) AT's.

I went from a 165hp Xterra to a 280hp G35, so I'm sure I'm going to be completely thrown off for the next couple months... but that hesitation seemed really excessive. It just threw me off when I peaked the RPM's so high. I guess I gotta just learn to not hit the gas so much huh?

I hope that's all it is...

mm maybe the previous owner drove like a grandma and your car has learned to drive like a grandma ... try a ECU reset maybe ?

try checking the AT fluid level, maybe it is low...this would keep it from instant downshift and acceleration....but low fluid will eventually tear up the trans.

They just gave it a 30k tuneup and checked all the fluids, but even dealerships can mess over your car I guess.

I was checking the manual shifting and it had no hesitation when I gave it gas, so it definitely seems to be a gear changing issue while in "auto".. if it is in fact an issue.

As one of the posters above stated.... Do a ECU reset. The car has learned the driving patterns of the previous owner who "actually luckly" probably drove like a grandma.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 12 hours to re-set the ECU. You should see immediate improvements after that. Let the car re-learn your driving style.

You will only have to re-set your radio stations after the re-set.

you guys are overthinking this whole issue... the issue is that he's probably in 5th gear under 2000rpm when he floors it.... so when he does hit the gas, the transmission just takes a second or two to shift down to a lower gear and engage.... same thing with my 03... it's annoying as fukkkkkk.... but grounding wires, or some better transmission components would do the trick and make it more responsive.... and besides no offense to the guy but he seems like a rookie, I mean who describes Tiptronic/Sequential as "pseudo-manual" ??
and he also states that when he floors it the RPM's go to 4500 and then he finally sees some acceleration... so with that statement it's as if he has no understanding the reason the revs go to to around 4000 is because the transmission downshifts to a lower gear, which obviously ends up being somewhere higher in the RPM range..... dude the higher in the RPM's that you are THE MORE POWER YOU HAVE AVAILABLE AT YOUR DISPOSAL!

could be what ADON said or you need an ECU reset.. one or the other was what i was thinking and maybe both

I'm thinking its nothing, just normal down shifting. Especially if its fine when you manually shift.

i say dont worry about it. it's an automatic - it will take a second or two when in low speeds to gear up / tranny speed to match engine speed....it's not a manual. you stated in " pseudo manual" it was fine -
only my .02

I have no problems saying I'm a rookie, cause I am. I know nothing about cars and buying this car has spurred some random drive to learn a lot about how it works. It's like a dormant personality just decided to come out of nowhere this year and this car exactly models it.

I found the original paperwork in the owners manual and a woman drove the car before me, so you may be right... I had no idea the car learned your driving style, lol that's crazy. I'll try an ECU reset if it's competely safe for a rookie like me to do and see what happens.

It could just be that I have never had a car with power though... my Xterra floored, all it did was downshift and start going 20% faster which means 40-60 in 7 seconds instead of 9, lol... oh man this car is giving me a complex and exhileration.
