How fragile are these engines? (Damage by theft question)
How fragile are these engines? (Damage by theft question)
I'm looking into buying a G35, and there's a really good deal haunting me, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. It involves a theft recovery "salvage title" 05 couple. 5k miles.
Original owner drove for 3 months, 1500 miles.
Car was stolen.
Thieves had for 3500 miles, 14 months.
Recovered with 5000 miles.
Now, the car was fully recovered, with the only damage being the key hole where it was broken into. Then a little curb rash on the front bumper, looks like poor parking ability.
Now, it's manual, and I can only assume 5000 miles with no oil change, the later 3500 being constant abuse. So, what are the chances that the engine's hurting? I know on my current car's engine, it'd hold up fine, maybe a little extra wear, but you guys are the expert on these.
I'm thinking I can grab this car for $17k. Then another $600 to make it perfect. What do you think?

He's actually asking $23.5k.
No way on that, I'm considering offering $16k or 17.
For all we know this thing could be treated better than the other 05's I'm looking at. Who's to say this car wasn't babied by a thief, while the car for $10k more was beaten by the owner's teenage son?
Still though, it has me worried. I like to plan for the worst.

salvage = no warranty ..... high millage above 60k = no warranty ....
With that said, I would rather buy used high millage g because, at least, I know that the car has been taken care of.....

I would never buy a salvaged vehicle... unless it was going to be a pure off road racecar. You will never be able to resell it - not for any reasonable amount anyway (unless you find a completely unreasonable dumb@ss)...
Those aren't the original rims/wheels. All 2005 6MT coupes came with 19's

14 months? That sounds very fishy especially for a theft. I would tell him heres 15k and call it a day if you are serious on purchasing it. I know I wouldn't just because of the title. I mean if you are going to offer 16k why not just go to the dealer and get yourself a nice 06 for a bit more money.
If I had to guess, I would say those are the 18"s found on the 2005 automatics with the sport package. Anyways, the 19"s that came on all the 2005 6MT's (ALL OF THEM) were split 5 spokes
