Oil change issues

I've got a 2005 g35 coupe... I drained oil and filter, and as per specs on this board and other places on the net, filled up wiht 4.7q of oil. The dipstick reads WAY high (like halfway up the stick) on the side with the scale, but the other side looks right on.

I havent got a owners manual so I honestly have no idea what real capacity should be, but what was drained out seemed like a lot less than 4.7q.

I dont want to drive the car overfilled.. .so I am hoping somone can give me a quick response. Also anyone got a copy of owners manual or service manual in pdf form?

Thanks

From the 05 coupe owners manual:
w/ filter change: 5 qt (US); 4-1/8 qt (Imperial); 4.7 liters
w/o filter change: 4-5/8 qt (US); 3-7/8 qt (Imperial); 4.4 liters

well you should be fine and the dipstick is quite hard to read since it is at and angle that could be the cause of your way over level of oil.

Did you change your oil filter too?

Oil filter holds a decent amount of oil, despite the fact that it's a relatively small filter.... and if you didn't change it, that's where the extra oil could be hiding. If you didn't change your filter, you should go ahead and do that ASAP... it's very important and also good insurance to change that at every oil change.

That reading halfway up the dipstick is just residual oil in the tube. Change the filter and put in 5 qts. For me, it comes out to be about 1/8" from the high mark.

Let the car sit overnight and take a reading before you start it up.

yup, i agree. the first time i checked my oil was at night in a poorly lit area. usually not a problem, but i damn near gave up trying to put the dipstick back in. i must have looked like a retard to others at the gas station i was at...

Ok, 3500 miles passed so I went ahead and changed the oil again... this isnt my car, but the fiances. Looks like oil that came out (with filter change too) was like 2qts shy of the original 4.7qts I put in there to begin with. Also I put the 5qts in there and again reading WAY WAY high.

2 Questions, Does the 3.5 motor have places oil tends to accumulate that doesnt drain from under normal draining conditions

and if not, is it even POSSIBLE the thing is consuming that much oil? MY fiances father swears he hears ping from passenger seat with the window down, but I am not convinced thats the case.

btw the car only has like 20kmi on it, and while I wasnt the original owner, I know as long as I've had it, we've not abused it in any way shape or form.

Our oil dipstick was desigened by a total douchebag, you actually have to take 2 readings to be accurate. The 1st, note what the level is on the high side and then note what the level is on the low side and average them out.

So I take it this means you must be using synthetic oil in it?

you have to take the reading on a cold engine. there's oil on the tube, and when you take out the dipstick it picks up all that oil on its way up, due to its sh!tty design

let the residual oil settle overnight and try taking the reading in the morning before you start the car. the difference will be night and day... dark oil, clean stick

yes full synth, and none of this thin m1 5w30... in my sti, it chugs through that stuff like crazy, other 5w30's dont have the problem. (turbo blowby)

I am beginning to think I am one of many thats blessed with the excessive oil consumption problem. I took to infiniti and they are looking into it. They changed oil, and marked everything off (so I cant drain oil, in effect to attempt to get something fixed/replaced that doesnt need to be)

I hope the dealership I go to isnt full of a bunch of douches.
