Help: Oil Filter

Help...

I tore my oil filter in half... I don't know how to remove the rest of it! It is ripped all the way down to the thread where it threads on to the car. How do i get this looser and get it to come off!

All I can think of right now is to get it towed to the dealer and have them deal with it...

Is there anything I can do?

Tore it in half?

How in the world did you manage that?... doing the old "Screwdriver-through-the-oil-filter" trick?

It must have been on there pretty tight for it to rip in half(assuming you were turning it the right way to get it off), otherwise I'd suggest trying to use an oil filter wrench(metal band type) to see if it could grab onto whatever portion of the filter is still there and spin it free... but chances are that it won't work if it was on at all tight.

Could you post a picture of what's left of the filter? People might be able to give you better suggestions if they can get a visual of what you're looking at.

Yeah there isn;t much filter left at all it basically tore through the middle. I think I am going to let the idiots who sold me the car look at it. I dont even know where to start. I can see the threads where the filter screws onto the car and tried to use a pair of vice grips to remove it and that didn;t work either...

I am really up a creek here...

Any help would be much appreciated

i dont have a camera with me I am out of town for the summer... It is basically just the part that screws onto the car and some shards of aluminum! I tried getting a hold of the part that threads on... but no use

in this case is pretty darn hard to take it off... i know exactly with you mean.. what i would do in this case is use tape.. i prefer black tape an tape it around the thread to give you a better grip.. then use a clamp..

Nissans mini filters....?

I've had a simular incident with filters when I didn't have the correct size
filter wrench. Ended up driving a screwdriver thru the filter......what a mess!
This will never happen to me nowdays since I use K&N filters with the 1 inch
nut on the end of the filter......I have a open end/box end in that size.
You've gotta get that damn thing off.....protect the threds and try the
screwdriver/hammer fix carefully....vice grips/hammer....WTF somethings
gotta work??

What about taping around the remaining portions of the filter with some kind of tacified tape to get some grip, and then take a rag and throw it over the end of the filter so that the shards of aluminum don't cut your hand and see if you can spin it off. Your hand is not going to apply enough force to damage the filter anything significantly worse than it already is, and I think the cut up piece of metal from the remaining portion of the filter might actually give you some grip when touched through a dual layer of cloth layed over it.

That's one messed up oil filter........!

So, did you get it off yet? Even if it was put on too tight (obvious) with the
correct wrench it will loosen....next time right?

That would make sense... since they call the Skyline Godzilla in Japan due to the earlier generations dominance in racing.

Maybe you can get him to take it back off.
