oil consumtion threat- how wide spread?

How widespread is the oil consumption issue? Does it happen all of a sudden, gradually get worse? I have an 04 with about 35K on it, just wanting to know what years were affected? What causes this issue?

Do some digging around. There are numerous threads on this subject. Its mainly on the rev-up engines. But, older non-revups are also susceptible. Mine just got replaced because of oil consumption.

The dang dipstick is hard to use, so I have been measuring the oil after an oil change.

I assume that when people do that when they have oil consumption they are not getting 5 qts out.

I have no consumption. Granted I have a 5at, but I use it in manual most of the time and I drive pretty hard. Less likely to spin any tires with AWD, so its fun to launch hard.

Not very widespread. I had a first year Z (6mt) and now an '06 G (6mt). Don't even burn half a quart between oil changes.

Had 70k on the Z. I have 15k on the G

Oil consumption should only happen on the rev up motors, which you dont have. You will be fine.

It also happens on the older, non-revups. But, most of those that had the problem should have already been taken care of. Mine was sort of an exception. The previous owner initiated the oil consumption test, only to trade it in 2k miles later...

Oil Consumption.......?

My '04 doesn't have any issues with consumption and the dip stick is a PIA
but with a little patience it can be read. Try a flashlight, sometimes it's
needed to find the hole to tight for brail. The only G's that have
oil consumption are the late '05s & '06s with the REVUP engine design. No
one has admited what the problem is but I'd guess poor quality rings. Someone should fall on their sword.....Ouch!

Why does everyone keep saying this? I'm not trying to scare anyone who has an '03-'04 6MT, but I JUST had my engine replaced for the oil consumption issue and I do NOT have a rev-up engine...

There's poll in this site and an extensive thread on my350z. It is NOT only revup motors. My 2003 coupe is consuming about 1qt every 1000 miles. Going to begin consumption testing later this week.

I thought that my car was fine, since I always had the dealer change the oil, and they never mentioned anything. But when I started to actually check the levels myself, sure enough, the problem was there.

I'd suggest that everyone start paying close attention to their oil level, especially since some of us are getting close to the end of warranty.

My car a 03 AT with 78,000 just took a dump. Thinking it might have been the synthetic oil. On my new motor I'm going to use 10w 50 or maybe a blend..Funny thing the FX-35 with same engine is fine...

Very good questions.

I guarantee you every one of these questions and more have been put on a fishbone diagram in power point and projected up on a large board room video screen with every engineering director, manager and executive at Nissan headquarters with an audience of 20-30 Nissan engineers watching, wispering, conjecturing, hypothesizing and taking notes.

This has to be a very serious issue behind the scenes.

Do other VQ powered Nissan/Infiniti vehicles have the oil consumption issue as well? You would think that with this engine being in so many vehicles that they would have the fix down pretty quickly.
