Re: royal purple motor oil

I'm an engineer for Royal Dutch Shell & I've seen lab analysis & test confirming the values of synthetics. As far as RP goes, my former employer ( Amerada Hess ) switched to that after numerous lubrication related bearing failures with a conventional stock oil. The rotating equipment that RP was used in ran quieter ( dB meter OSHA noise surveys ) as well as cooler. This is equipment that runs 24/7/365. After routine teardowns the mechanics working on the jobs commented that the bearings showed virtually no wear ( after field micrometer tests ). In fact, we extended the teardown intervals based on this info. Personally, I used Mobil 1 for years but have switched to RP since discovering this "real world" testing. BTW - I worked in a speed/machine shop in my younger ( much!! ) days & only Quaker State turned to sludge after 3k ( or less!! ). As far as RP making power I have to confess that I've only seen the same dynos as the other guys here have but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. As for the color, John Williams ( the inventor of the oil ) did that to distinguish his oil from others ( or so I'm told ). Good stuff, IMHO.

Re: royal purple motor oil

Ive been using RP since my third oil change in my G. I just recently changed again after about 4250 miles and saw no evidence whatsever of sludge. In fact I'm not sure, but I think my MPG has gone up by about 5-10%, but this may just be after break in. I would love to see this report if it truly does exist. Thanks.

Don't think you'll be seeing any report. I think Mean Gene provided some fairly conclusive evidence. My own experience, as well as others I trust, plus other third party reviews say this is great true synthetic stuff. Not that there aren't other good brands to choose from (Redline, Amsoil, Mobil 1). That would be my short list.

Not calling anyone out, but I've seen MeanGene's response posted many times before on other forums. His story is very similar to what I've read at least four or five times before. Often it's phrased to provide praise to Amsoil, Mobil1 or other synthetics.

But like I always post... read, read, read... there's lots of data out there on this and other automotive/oil forums. When you're satisfied that you've read enough opinions, form your own, and use the oil and drain interval you're most comfortable with.

Re: royal purple motor oil

soooo, considering there is some debate on this...why not just stick with amsoil or mobil 1? Seems like safer alternatives. I heard nothing but great things about amsoil..after 7000 miles of amsoil synth, my oil was still good..So i was sold.
