Noise when starting

I notice a grinding like noise just after the car starts. I'm guessing the starter doesn't disengage fast enough from the flywheel and grinds for quarter second or so. I also notice that it is temperature dependant, happening almost every time last winter when the temp is below 30f and almost never in summer.

Anyone else get this? Anyone know if there is a TSB?

I definitely have this problem too... and it occurs sporadically. I do notice it occurs a lot more often when the engine is cold, and hasn't been driven for a while. No idea what it is though, and the mechanics at the shop of course can never reproduce it.

Also, I've been hearing a sort of grinding noise when starting the car up cold and then accelerating until it shifts out of 1st and into 2nd (I have a 5AT Coupe). It almost even sounds like a "release" sort of noise... it's been happening basically ever since I got the car, and I also have no idea what is the issue...

Engine noise with cold starts

I have noticed the same thing from the first year that I purchased my 04 g35.Only in cold weather and if the car hasn't been used in two or more days. Very rough grinding noise but goes away almost instantly. Dealer says they have never heard of such a complaint.

Long term this is not good for the car if it is my theory about the starter and flywheel grinding. The "real" problem is if the flywheel looses a gear tooth from constant grinding - getting in there and replacing isn't cheap. Repetition will cause unnecessary wear and cause premature failure on both the flywheel and the starter. Starter failure isn't such a big deal $300. The flywheel like I said is much more expensive.

Eikon says the same thing here:

If you really want your dealer to "hear" the noise I would suggest we start recording it on either your cell phone, which isn't the best quality or us a regular handheld camcorder. I might just do this when the problem begins again for the season. It is still above freezing in the garage and hasn't started yet (i'm in chicago).

I checked youtube.com and this is the only thing I could find.....

And these guys think it's a starter problem too.

I'm also having this prob below that matt35s said, and i alos have an auto though i pretty sure this one isn't related to the starter. Anyone know what this is?

OK, you guys with the noise - are you using synthetic oil or dino? (Just seeing if there is a commonality here.)

sounds like there are 2 noise's were talking about. one from the tranny and one possibly from the starter.

those w/ the 1'st gear "release" noise, maybe check your transmission fluid for proper level and color. maybe a seperate thread would be good.

previously I used mobil 1 synthetic. starting on last fill i used the XP (Extended Performance) version of that same oil.

My startup noise comes from the front.. the timing chain tensioner or guides..until full oil pressure kicks in.

this is really weird, I heard the same noise for the firs time this morning. It was a cold start, but of course it was only overnight since i haven;'t driven the car.

I actually turned the car off and on 2 more times to see if i could duplicate it, but i couldn't. It was a weird grinding sound. Scared the crap out of me. Wonder what it could be. I'll see what happens today after work when i start it.

damn thing happened again this morning. It's the same grinding noise i had from my post above. It's only when I cold start my car, it does sound like the starter is grinding. Weird?

domenic, take a video of it so we can hear/see! i would but it hasn't started up yet as I am in a garage and it's only 40f here. Outside is about 25. Mine didn't start up till it was freezing in the garage.

that way we all know exactly what noise were talking about AND you/we can show the dealer and they can fix/replace what you need faster so they don't have to wait for the car to "freeze" overnite.

Yeah it only does it once after a nite of freezing temps.

Are you in a garage or outside?

Quick update on this issue... I haven't heard the grinding noise at startup lately. It seems like it fixed itself... I'll let you guys know if it occurs again though.
