Engine stalling with newly added mods...

Please help. I just added, FI cats, MD 5/16 spacer (no leaks, no CEL), and when I am cruisin from 60 to 80 MPH and take the car out of gear to put in neutral, my car will stall. (I only do this when approaching a red light, or when I have to come to a quick stop)

I never had this issue before the two mods I mentioned above. Anyone else have this issue...anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening?

Thanks in advance for helpful responses.

-Jay

This issue is usually related to your aftermarket intake. Either put the stock back on or stop putting your car in neutral (which I believe is retarded anyways). You should always be in gear, and if your coming to a stop, wait till your at around 20mph before putting it in neutral

i disagree... if ur at a light for long period of time, you should be in neutral (6mts).. keepin ur car in gear and holding down ur clutch is pointless.. if ur sitting at a red light.. not only does it tire ur leg, it's not good for ur throw out bearing..

-maybe you should take off your mods and see if that helps.. good luck bro..

Umm, did you read my post? I never said to be in gear at a stoplight , I said wait till your at around 20mph before putting it in neutral, THEN you may coast in neutral to the stop. If youre in neutral at 60-80mph speeds, that is simply f*cking stupid. Read posts carefully before you assume sergeant.

+1 like over oiled and your MAF is coated with filter oil?

Who cares about the coasting in neutral thing. It shouldnt stall regardless.
This not OP's question/problem. Lets stay on topic for this guy about intake=stalling

True, thats why my first sentence included "aftermarket intake", I just didnt know the 100% why his intake was causing it, thats why I recommended the easy way out, to put the stock one back on

Hmmm thats weird. My car will stall when I get mods done too. Except not when im moving. Only when I turn off the car for a short period of time and then start it again, when the rpms drop it drops so far down it stalls. But then it goes away.

Ecu reset then give it a few days. Maybe it will go away.

Our Nissan MAF's are very sensitive to aftermarket intakes. Look at all the threads on this forum about intake issues.

Thanks for the replies. Hey Chili---the only time I put the car in neutral is when I am coming up to a red light that is only a few hundred feet away, why downshift and coast under your tranny...possibly wearing it down.

Anyways, the Stillen intake has been on since 2005, and my driving habits have not changed since than. My past two hondas all had CAI installed, so I'm not that much of a newb when it comes to cleaning and oiling the filter...But I will check the MAF just the same.

I have some friends that live in Okinawa that were having the same issues with their FI cars (mostly Silvia's) and when approaching a red light, they would go to neutral and the car would stall. I just find it strange for a NA and FI cars to have the same issue.

Others, if you have any suggestions or heard of this with other members, please chime in.

I will be switching to my Stock air box in a few days.

Same issue, diff sources:

1) Turbo: Probably from running a BOV vented to air. It's venting air that's already counted by the maf and the ecu freaks and doesn't know what to do, hence the stall.

2) Na. I still think you have a leak around the spacer. You try spraying wd40 around the spacer while the car is running? Idle rise? Means a leak. Although most leaks I've had resulted in a really high pitched whistle

3) Could be one of your hoses isn't hooked up?

My car stalled twice when I first put in the Stillen Intake wile slowing down from 75-80 to 30. After 100-200 mi. it never stalled again. I think the ECU needs to adjust.

give it some time, it will go away. ECU must adjust to all the mods that u have done and it might take over a week. When i had my ECU dumped for programing a week ago my foot had to be on the gas first day and then the idle rpm got up to 450-500 (on the first line) now its on 600rpm line at idle. So give it some time it will go away. If u had a leak the idle rpm would NOT stay steady.

sounds like the idle is dropping when it is neutral causing the stall could be the ecu needs to adapt or a vaccum leak how does the car idle normally

Ok guys, thanks for all the replies. I did do an ECU reset after reconnected the the negative battery cable.

As for leaks, All the bolts have been retorqued, and there is NO whistling that I can hear. I have not tried the WD-40 trick, I assume when doing this, the WD-40 will be sucked in the plenum causing an RPM spike???

The car idles fine while in neutral. It starts off at 1300 RPM's when I first start it in the morning (cold) and when warmed up, it levels off at 600 or so. The idle is not irratic, its pretty much the same as it was before all the mods.

I guess, like many of you have said, give it some time and it will go away when the ECU resets. Its just frustrating.

BTW, I did install the Oil Catch Can that can be found in the DIY forums...if that means anything.
