sorry guys another synthetic oil question

I have searched the forums and couldnt find the answer. hope you guys could help me out.

I just brought a 2005 g35x with 37k miles on it.
My question is I would like to change to synthetic oil but im afraid to do so because the car was using dino oil up to now. Is it okay for me to change to synthetic oil now?

what would you guys recommend to use mobil1 or castrol synthetic oil?
does it really matter what type of oil filter i use? if so which brand should i use..

thanks alot.!!

Yes, you will have no problems switching to synthetic. I reccomend using Amsoil because they are the best but if you choose to use Mobil 1, get 0w-40 if you can find it. As for filters, yes it makes a difference which one you use. I usually get the Amsoil, Mobil 1, or K&N filters. Napa Gold/Wix is also high quality.

I agree on better than stock (or Fram) filters. Any premium 5-30 is all you need and what is factory recommended. Mobil 1 being one of the best syns that is widely available.

I went to pepboys today and checked out the oil they got.
They have two types of Mobil-1 (Mobil-1 and a longer mileage Mobil-1 (15000miles)).

-Which one is better?

-Also what weight should I get for N.Y's weather?

-There was also royal purple? I heard they were good for performace. Are they better than mobil1?
thanks alot guys..

Anything you buy will probably be okay. Unless you are a salesman putting on 30,000 miles a year I would not bother with the 15K oil.
Even if you use it, you should change your filter at least twice as often, and topping up the oil again.
Go by your owner's manual for recommendation of thinner oils for colder seasons.
I change both at 5K. 7.5K would be max.
You can find tests on the internet that say RP is not that great. Others swear by it.
I don't think any premium oil will hurt your G, it's the regular maintenance that counts.
Many of us use M1 because it's readily available, it's been used as pre-fill for several HP cars from the factory for a few years now, and no seems to have a problem with it.
Does not mean others or not competitive or even slightly better.
But I doubt you will notice a difference even after racking up a lot of mileage.
If you race all the time, there are a whole other group of oils to consider.
You can spend more $$$ on those now, if you believe it buys you anything.
As good as a G is, it's still a standard production car. Nothing magical.

Well, first off..... most of the oils that say "fully synthetic" really aren't synthetic at all. It's all symantics, advertising hype, laws ect.... But several are still good oils and some provide better protection than true synthetics. I would go with either Penzoil Platinum 10W-30 or M1 0W-40, which both have shown through UAs to perform well in our engines. As for filter, I don't know that it really matters much it you change every 3-4K. I use a M1-110. There is nothing special required when switching from different oils.

I definetly wouldn't go beyond 5k on the oem filter. After that, it wouldn't be filtering anything at all. I do mine every 3.5k-4k along w/ oil change

couple more questions guys...

- I also purchased german castro synthetic (0-30w) today at auto-zone. They only had excatly 5 left. I brought it all. Is 5 quarts enough for our g35x? I dont want to change the oil yet until im sure 5 quarts will be enough.

- Which filter is the best? K&N, Napa gold, mobil one??

thanks....
