Mixing oil when oil level is low?
Mixing oil when oil level is low?
Hi All,
I went out of town with the G and did my regular routine check on the oil and notice it was low (right on L). It has been about 4,000 miles since my last oil change and I plan on getting it soon once I get back home. However, the oil is still clean and I'm not sure what type of oil the Infiniti dealership use (should've asked)...so is it bad for me to add some oil that may not be the same brand? I just want to add some oil so that it doesn't get too low by the time I get back home, or should I be okay?

manufacturer recommends 5w30 oil..some dealers put in regular, synthetic blend, or just synthetic. Just put in regular oil as soon as possible so you don't do damage to your engine.
No need for the same brand, just try and get the same type of oil i.e 5w30, 10w30. Synthethic oil blends fine with non-synthetic.
You're much better off mixing oils than driving with a low oil level in any case. Once that oil level goes low and you spin a rod bearing, the damage is done. You'd have to get way more than a quart low for that though....

I've never had this problem and the car is 2 years old, I just recently been commuting back and forth from Ohio to Georgia and I figure it was the high heat and all the highway driving I've been doing...I heard about the oil consumption problem but I'll look into it if it keeps occurring..thanks!

I actually just went to get a quart of Mobil 1 and filled the engine up and it took my oil level to half way. I guess that's not too bad for running 4,710 miles since my last oil change (all highway)...I bought another quart and added it just to make sure and it brought it up to a little bit past full. Probably overdid it but at least that should hold me up till I go home...thanks again everyone!

^^^No problem...wish mine were good as yours.
Still...I even find your consumption unacceptable in todays standards and when there's lots of rev-up VQ's that have no consumption issues at all.
Btw, Andy got his replacement. It's all good far as I know.
Have safe travels home...
