dealership question
my 03 coupe has a tranny problem with 5th gear i called infinity and they told me that they will cover me with a transmision, but i had to pay for a new clutch, which i was o.k with until they told me it will cost 2 grand. in reality my clutch is o.k,but they will not do the job if i dont get a new clutch. not fair nor right for them to charge me for a clutch i dont need. if it was a normal price like what an aftermarket one goes for i will do it, but they refuse. what can i do?

Back to the OP....
How many miles are on your car? Has the clutch been replaced once before? Yes, $2K is ridiculous. However, a good aftermarket clutch, pressure plate and flywheel will cost you over a grand, so in reality it's not that far out. Flywheel, yes, because it is my understanding (correct me guys) that the flywheel is NOT machinable.
Now from the Stealership aspect, they won't cover it unless you do the clutch b/c a bad clutch can f/u a new tranny.
Here is a list of OEM parts from www.infiniti-parts.com:
Disc, g35 03-04 $75.65
Flywheel, g35 03-06 $899.03
Pilot bearing, g35 03-06 $7.46
Pressure plate, g35 03-04 $141.24
Release bearing, g35 03-06 $29.46
That's $1152.84 for OEM parts, the Dealer will most likely charge more.
Now the Jim Wolf Technology package:
Disc and Pressure plate: http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/cus...asp?PartID=454
$485.00
Light weight Flywheel (half the weight of OEM): http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/cus...asp?PartID=430
$450.00
add the other parts....
Total: $971.92

To the OP..
YES thats how warranty works they will cover your transmission but warranty will NOT cover wear and tear items (Brakes, Clutches, Air Filter, etc..)..
Depending on the condition of the clutch the dealer will either transfer your existing parts over, recommend a new clutch, or decline the job until the new clutch is installed.
Why they do this is because if you refuse the clutch (After recommendation) and you come back with the same problem they can kick you to the curb if its the fault of the clutch because they've done their job - recommending you the clutch. However if your clutch is badly worn / worn out its going to effect their diagnosis and they may not be able to verify that the repair was a success and more importantly if the trans fails again and its due to the clutch its on the dealer..
I know it sounds dumb but you wont believe the amount of people that'll try to sue or dispute their wear and tear item with infiniti causing a big mess so they keep it simple.. we R&R trans and you replace clutch..
Now if $2,000 is alot for clutch and flywheel you can take your car out of their shop and install the clutch then bring it back to the dealer to get warrantied...
Or
Talk to your service advisor.. tell him your sort on $$ due to the holidays and see if he can do a discount for you.. but $2000 is about right (they're charging you full list - but then again you're no one special to them) you're more likely to get a discount if you bring your car to that dealer to get serviced regularly.
But you may be able to get as low as $1,800 ish.. as parts are around $1,500-$1,700. (yes factory stuff clutch/flywheel are $$)
Edit: its perfectly fine for you to replace your clutch with an aftermarket (they cannot decline you warranty because of an aftermarket item) As long as the aftermarket item takes place of the OEM part the same way.. but if get like a race clutch with out any springs then you might have a problem. Before you do this check with your advisor so you wont run into any problems.

my tranny was covered under warranty including the labor. The labor to have the Flywheel/clutch replaced is $45. pretty ridiculous but my car has been at the stealership since Monday and i need it back
To the op were you grinding 5th gear? I myself am grinding 2nd gear. I got told the same thing almost.
Everyone:
they want me to install a new clutch and they are certain that's why I'm grinding 2nd gear
. Someone please tell me they are wrong. I guess I'll have to get a clutch first before they get me a new tranny. I didn't think one grinding gear could be caused by a clutch. Shouldn't all the gears grind or slip if it's the clutch causing this?
