Service Engine Soon?!

Just put in an intake/filter and the filter was too big so i bought a smaller k&n. the k&n is reallyyyyy smallll its almost funny but fits better so i put it on. Now my service engine soon light is on. This due to the really small size of the filter or is this a totally different issue?.....only 15,000 miles on my 03 coupe.

I think i remember reading it has something to do with the O2 sensor, but i don't think it needs to be serviced. Your car is just taking in more air than it normally does.

The "service engine soon" light only reminds you to change your oil and take care of your maintenance. And if I remember the stock setting correctly, will come on about every 5k miles unless you've changed it to a smaller number yourself. If you change your oil yourself, you can get it reset by almost any mechanic or just wait and it'll reset itself eventually. Obviously, your intake filter has nothing to do with it.

The "check engine" light which would look very similar to the pics below, would be a reason to worry and run to check the code to see what's wrong, not the service engine light. If the check engine light (also known as the dreaded "CEL") comes on, then you would want to check the code to see what's wrong with your car. But if there's nothing noticeably wrong with your car, remember that false error codes are not uncommon.

The "service Engine Soon" light will come on for a number of different engine codes. There is no - recurring - "Service Engine Soon" condition that is related to time or distance. That light only comes up in response to an engine code. You need to have the car hooked to a scanner to determine the source of the problem.
