Crazy Question
This is for all the Gearheads out there. Has anyone or car company made a car with a supercharger and a turbo? Call it a SuperTurbo?
They are 2 different systems, so can they work together? I'm just curious but I can hear the flames now.

Re: Crazy Question
Basic answer: NO. No point. Possible? Sure, but the vehicle would be very hard to tune along with a slew of other issues.

Re: Crazy Question
P-38 Lightings had the setup you speak of but that was WWII and an aircraft engine. The did have great sucess tho.

Re: Crazy Question
different angle on the Q, here. Of course most would ask "why". I can only assume your thinking is that you could possibly overcome the negatives associated with each: spool-up and parasitic loss. Mazda used a different approach to achieve a similar goal in the last RX7. Rather than parallel TTs, they used an intercooled sequential TT set-up to mitigate spool-up, while still retaining the efficiency of an exhaust gas driven system. If I'm not mistaken, the turbos were of different size, the smaller feeding into the larger. Despite being twitchy, rough riding and prone to wheel hop, the last RX7 was an awesome car with a strong, linear powerband (unlike the peaky engine on the new RX8).

Re: Crazy Question
YES.
It is called twin-charging, or Twinching. They usually put the the SC in front of the Turbo so that you get an even ramping of power....but you have to kill the SC when the Turbo spools up because it will starve the turbo. Other than that, you can fit the turbo with an aux air intake.

some examples of twincharged vehicles:

Compound Forced induction MR2

One very sweet 92 twincharge Trueno GTZ
Bif long forum thread on a Twincharged Mini Cooper

Re: Crazy Question
Wow, I stand corrected. I did not know this type of FI was commonly used. Still seems like more work than necessary. But hey, that's what modding is all about.
