Just installed RT cats... rattle/buzz sound?

I need some help!

Engine sound is a little loud right now, does it get lower sounding after the cats settle in? Also, I'm getting some rattle sound from that area when I hit 3000 rpm. Or when it's parked and I rev the engine and soon as I let off throttle, it makes similar rattle.

I have a Fujitsubo Y-Pipe and Nismo CAI installed, rest of it is stock... Could it be I need new gaskets (November 2003 bought) or some part of install needs something to quiet the rattle/buzz? RT Cats had no bolts/nuts and the stock ones were too small. So they used 14mm bolts and 2 washers on each, wondering if that's good enough.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Just installed RT cats... rattle/buzz sound?

I just got my g with rt cats today too, but an infiniti dealership installed mine along with the nismo exhaust. I agree the cats are LOUD, man it can be annoying and I know that if iI only had the exhaust it would probably sound better. I have read on the z forums that after a while it does quiet down though. I'm getting a little bit of rattling but it sounds like it is coming from inside of the car rather than outside. Are you noticing a difference in performance?

I believe the rattle/buzz is common with the RT Cats. Best flow compared to other available cats but some side effects to deal with. There is quite a bit of info on this subject over at my350z.

I have the buzzing/rapiness on mine. It is a trade off for having such a free-flowing exhaust! The raspiness dissipates on my car asthe engine warms up. Then it is not very bad at all.

Low end, starting from a stop is much better! Should be better once I get past my 1st oil change and the cat breaks in more hehe.

Just worried about the buzz/rattle... it kinda sounds like a popcan rattling or ricer exhaust that broke =(

I just installed Test Pipes, Pop Charger and Z tube and they also have the raspy rattle, but for the power it will have to do. Plan to added stillen dual exhaust next week, not sure if this will help or make the sounds worse?

I've talked to a few people with high flow cats and stillen exhaust. They get pretty bad rattle. I could only imagine it would get worse with test pipes/stillen

You guys with the rattle should go to a muffler shop and make sure everything's on right, IMO. Also make sure that it's not the driver's side cat hitting the floorboard.

I installed my catback exhaust and had no buzzing, but then I put on my Injen CAI and have a buzzing noise when I punch it. It sounds like the denists drill.

Re: Just installed RT cats... rattle/buzz sound?

Could be a number of things. If they have heat shields, one of the spot welds could have popped off and be buzzing. That happened to me and I ended up ripping the shield off. It also could be hitting the floor/chasis, or if it sounds like something is clanking around, the cat could be damaged and need to be replaced. If they are whacked hard enough, it could break the "honeycomb" into pieces, which could also cause problems.

I have the same rattle but only under heavy acceleration, I don't know if its the same, but I hear it right on my left side ear, it kind of sound like its coming from the driver side airbag curtain area, I read some where that the rattle is comig from the seatbelt adjuster, where it can be adjusted, I had a freind take that panel off and place rubber sheild over the metal and it stopped rattling, I don't know if that will help anyone, or maybe I'm just crazy and the only one that had that problem

I also installed test pipes and have that rattling sound. My check engine light also came on so I took it off. Anyone know what the hell that wrattling sound is.

Re: Just installed RT cats... rattle/buzz sound?

jaerian,
I have the same problem with my cat install. I did a quick test and saw that the bottom of the engine twists toward the left side of the car when you accelerate. This means that if you have a tight tolerance between the laft cat and the heat shield, you'll probably have the left cat contact the heat shield when under medium-heavy throttle.
That's exactly what happens with my car. I tried bending the heat shield, but that's not enough. I probably need to loosen the 3 bolts where the header attaches to the cat and reposition the cat--then tighten again. Hope that does the trick for me.
By the way, the right side used to vibrate a little when decelerating in the 2000 RPM range. I bent the heat shield on that side and it got rid of that light metallic sound.

Hmm... This does not sound good. You would think RT though would have done major research before they launched these. I am wondering what kind of directions they supply with them and what they entice. It looks like a few of us needs to give them a ring... I wanted to buy these too at the same time I was going to buy the Crawford V.
