quick question about the "changeover"
quick question about the "changeover"
i was wondering about the changeover that occurs around 5000 RPM. is it similiar to VTEC or is it different. all i noticed is that the engine and exhaust note get noticably beefier and the car seems to pull harder. on the horsepower plot on the dyno results i got it show a gain in power also.
i was wondering because, having an automatic, when i go into fourth gear the lame gearing throws me just short of this changeover spot.
is there a way to drop this spot as you can change the where the VTEC cracks in hondas? would it be beneficial? how do i get fourth to land in this area? just different gearing?
thanks

i am talking about the discernable change in volume of engine/exhaust note and the pull felt from around 5000 RPM and up.
go take the car out and put it in second while going about 15 MPH. go WOT and when you hit around 5000 RPM you should notice this also...
im asking because i was wondering what exactly causes this... i wanted to know if it was adjustable, beneficial to do so, and so on... i lose EVERY race because of the fallout from the third to fourth gear shift. it is quite frustrating and was wondering if the only way to remedy this was with a shorter final drive or if i could simply adjust this with adjusting this changeover...
if so, i could easily keep up with many other cars that i always seem to lose to...
if my car is the only one that does this then ... well ... i dont know what to say... ???

its an 06 auto with an AEM CAI and Injen SES...
i had a small video clip on my phone, but sadly i erased it... stupid phones can only take so long anyway...
so are there any other thoughts?

ugh... okay seriously... does anyone ever go through more than one gear when they race? has anyone ever gone from the top of 3rd at redline to fourth gear in an auto 5speed and noticed this or am i the only one that has ever drivin like this?
even when driving with the gate you still cant get the third to fourth shift to land past that changeover spot. it takes a second to reach it and then the car starts pulling hard again...
i compared it to VTEC in my earlier post because of my 2000 Honda Prelude i had once before. it was a four speed auto also with the auto-manual. when going from 1st to second, if i shifted at redline, it would land out of VTEC. if i put it in the manumatic and shifted it at 8000 RPM, which was stupidly deep in the redline, the second gear shift would land in VTEC and the car would pull noticebly harder.
i checked to see if it was all in my head by racing my prelude vs my eclipse several times on a backroad by my house. it was a much closer race when i shifted like that rather than letting the ECU shift for me...
sorry for the rant, but someone has to have the same frustration as i do by chance...

there is no such thing as a changeover. the peak in the power band for the vq is in the 4000-6000 rpm range. the only reason you hear a difference at wot is due to the intake. if you search this forum, you will realize that most members consider cai's as sound mods rather than performance mods.
also, no g35 owner relates to you using the term "vtec". the vq is not a variable valve engine. you should take the car to the track and experiment with different shift points to figure out where you need to shift for best ets.
lastly, you will have this thread closed down by the moderators if you are speaking of street racing in your above post. the mods here do not mess around with this subject.

i wasnt asking where the powerband in the car is, as i am very aware where it is... ive seen plenty of dyno graphs (mine and throughout the forum) and driven my car long enough to know where it is... thanks though!
i also wasnt asking what others think the CAI modifcation is or how it effects our cars. this happened well before i even installed the CAI anyhow. your absolutely right though. the CAI did nothing but make it sound throatier and make the changeover i am referring to even more apparent.
i never actually said that the car is equipped with variable cams. i was simply referring to the VTEC in my prelude as the closest reference to what is happening to my vehicle. if "changeover" and "VTEC" are words that you find offensive and would rather here something else please feel free to find another for me.
if i had my car with me i would have already made a video of this so you could see it... it does happen. im not going to waste my finger muscles typing something that does not exist. if it doesnt occur with your vehicle, dandy! then you really cant offer any help. im sure this occurs in some of the hundreds of other 06 G35's on this forum. maybe they can possibly help with my query...
as for my comment on testing my vehicles out... you dont have to be hall monitor... but next time ill leave out the part how i actually came to my conclusions...
but if anyone can offer some knowledge regarding my first post, that would be greatly appreciated.... thank you!!

dude, you have 18 posts and it is apparent that you know nothing about the car you drive. you come on this forum requesting information on how to adjust where the "changeover" occurs like you know this exists for a fact. there is no "changeover". no one here knows what you are talking about. as i've tried to explain it to you in common terms in which people talk about engines and engine performance, you are speaking of the peak part of the torque and horsepower curve. let that be that. unless you get into engine management and ecu programming, you're not going to change where this so called "changeover" occurs.
also, don't post here that you cant beat people racing and expect to get any real response from the guys here. learn to drive your car. respect the fact that you are a noob on this forum take everyones effort to help you with some appreciation.

so the fact that i dont come on this forum and throw my fingers across this keyboard as much as you do makes me a NoOb?
screw posts counts, i didnt just register yesterday. ive seen plenty of people flamed for stupid posts and idiotic things that they have posted. this was the best way that i could explain the way the sound differences were throughout the RPM band. if you cant take your car out and here this then your deaf...
ive driven plenty of cars. mainly cars that DONT have variable cams. when you are in a car with variable cams, it is quite easy to tell when, where and how they activate. i didnt say that the G35 had variable cams because first it doesnt even feel like a cam switch, it is not as abrupt, second most manufacturers advertise it all over there engine covers... like they did with the G37
BUT! as im accelerating through 3rd gear i DO here a noticable change in engine/exhaust noise... you cannot tell me i dont here it, as i have driven my car close to 100,000 miles and noticed it the entire time.
so... i didnt here an explanation on this thread that was satisfactory enough to explain what was going on as im driving. saying it was the intake meant nothing as it occured BEFORE i installed it and saying that the peak power starts from 4000 to 6000 doesnt relate either as this audible change happens at around 5000 not four...
