Yay for me! Did my 1st oil change...

After researching the numerous oil threads and oil filter threads I finally changed my own oil...

I had some hiccups along the way, but overall it was a good experience and I'll definitely be changing my oil myself from now on.

I bought a 5 Quart jug of Pennzoil (sp?) Platinum from Walmart, Copper Crush Washers from Nissan, and Wix Filter from NAPA.

Taking of the numerous bolts on the cover is a pain, but not bad if you have a drill (just loosened them with a 10mm socket) and then used a power drill with a phillips attachment (also to put it back on).

Unfortunately my oil filter was practically glued on, so after trying several methods, I took my trusty philips screwdriver and hammered it into the filter. It wasn't too messy, but allowed me to get the filter off.

Lubed up the new filter to hopefully avoid the same problem, topped off the oil, and back to business!

I doubt I'll feel a difference switching from crappy basic (pretty much Jiffy Lube oil from the previous owner) to a Full Synthetic, but piece of mind is worth something.

Yay for me.

Congrats on your oil change job and very nice to hear you've learned a lot from the experience. It's my belief that every one of us G enthusiasts should know how to change his/her own oil; there's no better way than to learn more about your car inside and out by changing your own oil

did my first change this weekend too! on a lift it was cake.

the filter is VERY small. smaller than what i used on my 4 bangers in the past.

5 quarts exactly is great (a cost savings)

and i really like how the filter is sideways, parallel to ground, made it much cleaner on the removal without oil runing down my arm!

lots of fun!

Did my first one yesterday as well. Besides fitting my jack under my car and loosening all the bolts, everything was a piece of cake.

Thumbs up

Same here--did my first oil change on the sedan last weekend, too. I second what bestos02 said: It sure was a pleasant surprise to see how easily accessible the filter was.

I was also happy to see that my jack points didn't get crushed by my work. Yippee!

For kicks, while the front was still on the stands, I also jacked up the rear to try to get every last drop of oil out of the pan, but interestingly, nothing else came out when I did this. Dunno why.

If you think that was easy, do the rear diff. CAKE.

If you have a 6MT, the trans is pretty easy too. It can get annoying since it's not as accessible, but not too bad.

Rhino ramps FTMFW for this stuff.

...I should have mentioned that the only unexpected situation was when I didn't have enough room to jack up the front of my car: Basically, there wasn't enough space for me to use the jack bar for pumping my jack. So, I used a something shorter than the bar (ie, a sturdy screwdriver) just to get my bumper high enough so that I could eventually use the bar.

Looks like it was an oil change weekend...

For the above situation, which is the case with any G, because mine isn't lowered and I still had to resort to this method, just grab some 2x4s and drive up on them. Provides that extra clearance you need to get the jack to the front jacking point.

Great experience overall, car feels the same, but sure feels good knowing I know what was done to the car and I saved a few bucks in the process.

Congrats!! on doing your own work. I always use K&N oil filters, they filter down to like 10 microns and they have a 1" nut welded on to the back for easy removal.

Thread Jack! Didn't I read that we can use the FX (V8) filters for our G's?
