tiptronic question
this may sound silly, but in tiptronic mode can you downshift? or should you just let the computer do it for you? this is my first post, but i have read several related threads but didnt see any mention of downshifting.
i just got an 06 g35 coupe and wanted to play around with this feature. also, when shifting for increased mpg what rpms do you usually shift at?
thanks for any input!

CAN YOU DOWNSHIFT? Absolutely. If you are going to fast for the next lowest gear (60mph trying to get it into 2nd) nothing will happen. You can't overrev the engine with the tiptronic (on either end of the spectrum: hitting the rev limiter at redline, or not letting you downshift if you are going too fast).
SHOULD YOU DOWNSHIFT? Not all the time. Unless you just want to drive agressively I would let the car down shift on it's own, especially the 3-1 shift you get when you come to a stop. You are probably slowing fast enough that manual shifting from 3-2-1 would be a waste of time and more wear on the tranny than anything.
SHIFTING RPM FOR MAX FUEL ECON... I beg to differ. Maybe MM just gets you in the "spirited mood" so my mpg is definately better in D than in MM. If you have a drive with several hills along the way I could see flipping it from D to MM to keep the RPMs up instead of it shifting to 5th as soon as it can... but just for stop and go driving I would think it'd be obvious that shifting at 1800-2300RPM would be a better gas saver than shifting at 3000RPM

on another note speaking about engine blowing how long can the motor stay in the red zone or how high can it go b4 blowing.

If u forget it in first and dont shift this is what you'll hear very quickly:
Vroooooom *POP*POP*POP*POP*POP*POP*... Thats the engine bouncing off the rev limiter or redline, whatever YOU want to call it.
You will get better gas mileage in triptronic... Best way to do it is while driving with a LIGHT foot, keep tapping the shifter in the + direction until it shifts up into the next gear... "D" rapes your gas because it holds the gears longer and over exagerates the throttle position.
Only downshift when you're trying to race/ drive aggressive or if you want to slow down with using your brakes ( usually when you want to time a red light changing into green).

^^ I could totally see you hit the shifter up 3 or 4 times before it finally has the speed to actually get into that gear... good thing it's not a 6MT, you'd probably bog the **** out of it everywhere
... you say all this, but your signature is still asking for gas money
I'll keep it in D...
